The steady deeline of the whale fishery
gOes on without change. Even in the
hyperborean regions of the Arctic and
Antarctic Seas, to which whales now
have to resort, the fishery is becoming
gradually of less value and importance.
The Greenland fishery for a good many
jeers was a profitable field for whalers,
bat even that is now giving out. The
fleet of whalers, last year, fitted oat in
Scotland for the Greenland Seas num?
bered only ten vessels, and down to
Jane 1, bat two Bmall whales had been
taken, although the fishery usually
doses by July 1. This looks very much
as if the Scotch, notwithstanding thejr
indomitable perseverance, would be
tempted to abandon this almost fruitless
pursuit Whale oil is already largely
superseded by petroleum, but whale?
bones will n?t be abandoned without a
pang of regret.
Tbe Augusta Constitutionalist says:
"At the Conference atCokesbury, S. C,
last week, tbe matter of preachers using
tobacco was discussed as unbecoming
and calculated to do harm to tbe rising
generation by the influence of a bad
example. One of tho members soon
quashed proceedings by requesting the
brethren to hand over their tobacco to !
him. Strango to say, not another word
was said about tobacco, and a very thin
collection of fine-cut and twist was
lifted."
A young lady of Covington was great
surprised the other morning, on disco?
vering in the bed in which she had
slept tho night previous, a huge high?
land moccasin, larger than a man's arm,
coiled up between the shoets, and to all
appearances it had been by tho side of
the sleeping girl all night. In an at?
tempt to kill the snake it caught the
quilt in its mouth, and two teeth were!
jerked from the reptile's head beforo it
would let go.
