To Deotkot the Cotton Worm.?On
the first of the session at Indianapolis,
Professor Qharles V. Biley, State jpnio
mologist o! Missouri, read a short paper
in reference to the ootton worm of the
South and its doe traction. Ho said that
it had not been his good fortane to ex?
periment in the ootton field, but from itB
success in ridding the North-west of the
Colorado potato bag, and bis experience
in tho destruction of pestiferons insects
generally, he would without hesitation
recommend the use of PariB green, fully
believing that at a trifling cost?not ex?
ceeding thirty or forty oenta per acre?
the cotton could be saved and future ra?
vages be prevented. He said it was sin?
gular, in.view of the fact that the da?
mages from this worm had reached
10 muoh as $20,000,000 in a single
week, that no legfs'ative action had
been taken for the appointment of a
oomnfTB?ion to examine as to the nature
and habits of this insect, and to devise
means for its destruction. Our legisla?
tors, to save an expense of $1,000 or
$5,000 per year for the employment of
an ofllcer to watch the interests of the
pooplo, and to gnard them against the
depredations of insect foes, have per?
mitted the saorifioa of crops to the
amount of many millions.
In UBicg the Paris green, which is a
poison, mix thoroughly with cheap flour,
in proportion of one port of green to
twenty-five or thirty of flour. Pat tho
preparation in a bag of thin material,
or in a perforated tin box, and attach to
the end of a pole eight or ten feet in
length. Holding this in ono hand, pass
it along over4he row, tapping the rod
gently, and taking oare that the wind
shall blow away from you. Apply when
the dew is upon the plant, and the least
particle of the dust will havo the desired
effect. Used in this way, it is perfectly
safe, and we earnestly urge a trial and
report.
A little boy in school gave one of tho
best definitions ever given to economy?
??poring potatoes thin."
