' WoTTtiDH*T' WoB?.n-^S6?ae" months
Ago, b> lot of Sioux Indians robbed a stage
coach on the)'plains, and ioand among
the paokagoa of freight a clothes- wringer.
One of the chiefs had been in St.
Louis eoveral times, end had observed
certain beings grinding terrific malic out
of a maohino with the same kind of a
crank as that upon the wringer, so a
oonviotion seized his sonl that ihia was a
barrel organ. Ho had the wringer care?
fully carried back to oamp, and made up
his mind that from that day forward the
Bilenae of that solitary wilderness was to
be broken by a ceassless ronnd o? tunes
and vibrations. First he grasped the
orank and began to tnrn it, in order to
show his braves how the thing wao done.
He devolved it fox Sixteen hoars, bat ho
masio came: Then the other Indians
took a band, one after the other, for a j
week. Then the squaws were turned on, i
bnt without any effect. Then the chief
?wont oat and stole a male and a thresh
ins 'machine, and rigged np a lot of
blocks and pulloys and ran a belt over
the crank; then exploded powder under
the hind legs of that male, bo that he
kept charging np the inolined plane of
that threshing machine, and the wringer
made sixty re volution a in a minute. Bat
it wouldn't work. So the chief name to
the conclusion that the oonoern was
under some kind of a curse, and he ran
ont the. medicino man, and had a war
danoe, and drove .yellow pine stakes
through & oonplo of white captives, and
jumped around and*howled, while the
medioine man played some wild, myste?
rious ma*i<r on * drum. Then the re?di
oine men hitched np the male again,
and, after, starting the machine, he
leaned up agetinat it while he mattered
an exorcism. In a ooaple of minutes
the rubber rollers olenohed his breech
oloat and began to haul him in with his
knees, doubled np against his face.
When he got half way through he stack,
and the maohino stopped. He couldn't
move, and the chief wna afraid to touch
the ?wringer, ?o the braves fell on the
doctor, and jabbed him with a knife, and
scalped nim; and then they buried him
and the maohino as they were. This
was the last attempt of the Sionx In?
dians to cultivate the fine arts.
A lady writer in one of the religions
papers thinks women should be appoint?
ed teachers of classes of the larger boys |
and yonng men, because "the love and
Syerenoe that big lads feel for a lady j
aohor fill np a gap in their lives at a
very dangerous time, and prevent them j
falling a prey to the enticements of bold;
and forward girls, who would make them
most unworthy wives.'7 No doubt!

England has been sentenced to ?20 fine j
or a mouth's imprisonment, for escaping j
from the hospital and making a circuit;

COUPON BONDS
OF THE
CITY OF COLUMBIA,
Secured by a Sinking Fund. Coupons secured
by an Annual Tax and Receivable for City
Taxes. Bonds non-taxable by the City.
Bond Debt of the City Limited by Law to
?600,000. Taxable Property of the City
$7,000,000.
rpHE BONDS offered are authorized by an
a Act of Assembly?approved March 13,
1872, for the construction of the now City
Hall. Their final redemption te, by the terms
of said Act scoured by a "sinking fund," to
he accumulated from the annual ronts of the
building: These rents will reaoh from $8,000
to $10,000 per annnm; and the Carolina Na?
tional Bank holds a lien of the building for a
term of twenty years,*as true too, with power
to collect the rents and hold the same invest?
ed as a fund for tho redemption of t ho bonds.
By said Act a special annual taxis required
to be levied to pay the simi-annnal coupons,
and the Carolina National Bank is made tho
trustee of tho oity to receive the taxes when
collected and to pay the coupons. Tho cou?
pons are also receivable for City taxes.
The taxable property of the oity is at pre?
sent assessed at $7,000,000; and by said Act
the bond debt of the oity cannot be inoreaaed

COUPON BONDS,

The Central National Bank,
op columbia.
?"?FFEB8 for aaleaiimited amount of above- j
\j mentioned BONDS, at the following rates:
FIRST MORTGAGE BONDS, (only $10,000 per '
mile.) at 82 cents and accrued interest; SE?
COND MORTGAGE, (only $5,000 per mile,)
at 75 oents and accrued interest, and reoom-1
mend them to Trustees and others having
money to invest, as being the most desirable
security on the market, for the following rea?
sons, to wit:
First.?They cannot he taxed by the State,
County ob City. The United States Supreme
Court, in tho case of the Northern Central
Railroad vs. Jackson, (soe 7 Wallace, Supremo
Court U. 8 , page 267,) decided that, when a
Railroad mortgage is a joint one,on property j
lying in two or more States, the bonds se?
cured thereby are not liable to be taxed by
either of the States; and the same principle
relieves them from taxation by County, City,
or Town. The Charlotte. Columbia aud Au?
gusta bonds are secured by a joint mortgago
on property lying in North Carolina, South
Carolina and Georgia.
Second. ? Because they aro absolutely safe,
being secured by a first mortgage ot only
$10,000, aud a second mortgage of only $5,000
per mile on tbo entire road from Cbarlotto to
Augusta, aud on all tho workshops, bridges,
franohieo and equipments of said road.
Third.?Because tho sale ol tbo tirat mort?
gago bonds will extiuguich the floating debt
of the road, and the proceeds of the second
mortgago bond* will bu exclusively applied
to improving the road and adding to its
equipments; thus enhaucing the value of tho
properly mortgaged.
?Fourth ?Because the bonds are coupon
bonds, and the interest payable in New York,
Cbarlotto, Columbia or AugnBta, at the op?
tion of the holder. Thus th -y can bo col?
lected through auy bank without exponso.
Fifth.?Tbo business of tbo Road is rapidly
increasing, and the property and franchise
daily becoming moro valuable?the net earn,
ings for tho last five mouthB being ovor fifty
per cent, more than fo< the ouiicsponding
montbB of tho preceding year.
Sixth ?These Sends are practically re?
deemable in gold, for epeoio payment will cer?
tainly be resumed be lore their maturity, in?
vestors will, tberefi>ri>, buy with greenbacks
woitb 871 cents, and receive their pay at par
?thus adding a profit of ovkii thirty cents
on tbo dolUr on the First Mortgage Bonds,
and over thihty-seven cents on ilie Second
Mortgage Bonds, and in the meantime receiv?
ing a high rate of interest.
Finally.?As these Bonds have a fixed
value in New York, Charlotte, Columbia aud
Augusta, tboy aro considered good collate?
rals, on which money can alwaja be borrowed
for temporary purposes.
