THE DAILY ''Let our hut ConBuroa BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C, FRIDAY MOBNING, FEBRUARY 21, 1873. VOL. VIII?NO. 28G. Thh Winanb Patent.?The House Committee on Patents have decided favorably on the petition of Thomas & Rosa Winano. of Baltimore, who ask to go - before the Commissioners of Patents to obtain an extension'of their patent for ?what is known as the oigar steamer. It appears that daring the absence of the Messrs. Win ans from the country the time in which an extension of their pa? tent coald be applied for expired. In the papers accompanying the petition it is stated that several experimental steam? ers of this description have been built,, at a * cost to the Messrs. Winans of $1,200,000, and they propose to con? tinue their experiments until they solve tbe problem of a quick transit across the Atlantic. Their latest model has one foot of diameter to sixteen of length. They expeot to make tho trip from New York to Liverpool in threo or four days. Tho Brooklyn Eagle says Austria must be the paradise of journalists. The Em? peror has offored a prize of ?5,000 for the best editorial less than a column in length on Austrian affairs. If this waB offered to Amerioans the number of competitors would be infinite. Most of the papers here know more about Aus? tria than they do of the United States. K. H. Reeney, who was sentenced to be hung Maroh 7, at Vi sal In, Cal., for the murder of Levi M. Fletobcr, has had his sentence commuted by Gov. Booth to imprisonment for life. On ac? count of tho pressure of a vigilance com? mittee, Keeney was removed secretly at night. <A Tolland, Ct., woman was born and married and died in the same room.
