A sea oaptain, recently arrived at San.
Francisco from New Orleans, exhibits an.
Irish tetter dog, to whom he accredits
one'of the most remarkablo explpita id
canine intelligence. 'The dog was, the
property of., the first mate, and was early
noted for extraordinary sagacity. When
the sailors took hold of the main brace
to haul it in, the dog immediately seiaed
the and and ran. t.ho length of the dook
with it, as if "lending a hand" to get
tho officer's order executed. A planter
to ok-a fnrioy to the dog,'and prevailed
on the first mete to proaenltho animal to
hinj. He carried it along with him 600
miles op tho Mississippi Bivesr, and en?
deavored to show the setter every kind?
ness. 'Bat Ohe night the dog. escaped,
and running along the river bank, leaped
aboard a boat, and was towed back to
New Orleans. But the ship had sailed,
and a eohooner oaptain, into , whose
hands the setter fell, took it with him to
New York. The ship from which the
dog wee .taken was lying on the other
side of the river, and hero is where the
marvel comes in. The dog, while look?
ing over, the aide of the vessel one after?
noon, seemed to take special notice of
the ship on the other side.' After a few
momenta It leaped overboard} swam to
its old home, and was taken aboard by
the delighted sailors. ?
