Ha denied that ho had iuaued orders to burn Colombia, bnt admitted that the army was greatly exasperated against South Carolina, and said this exasperation was increased by Geju Hampton'a rear guard, firing into his oamp a night or; two before entering Co? lumbia, which exasperation he and his officers participated in, and this was known . to the men. A. correspondence was then shown to Gen. Sherman, par porting to have taken . place between him sp-'X Gen. Ha?eok? while on hia march to Columbia. The communica? tion from Halleok desired him to destroy Charleston and sow it with salt, so that | there might no more nulli?ers or aeoes? sionists grow np there. To this, Sher? man,, in reply, wrote that(Oharleston and, Colombia would soon be in his liana's, and Halleok would base no oanseto com-j Elain of bis treatment of thorn; that be cid the Vkltpentb. Corps .with bim, and that corps did, their work well; and fur: ther, that be (Sherman) would not spare | the public- buildings iu Columbia, as be | did at MUledgeville. Qen. Sherman ad? mitted, on his examination, that this correspondence was authenticated. Qen. Sherman.stated, that he ooonpiwd Colom? bia with the Fifteenth Corps. In reply to the question whether he kept the men in the works after taking possession of the oity, he said no; he oonld not have done bo to have prevented the burning of every town in the State of South Ca? rolina. These responses were drawn ont by the representations of British claim? ants, who allege that their property at Colombia was destroyed wantonly and in violation of the OBages of war. Qen. Sherman manifested a good deal of ex? citement daring the investigation. Hotel Arrivals, December 19, 1872.
