think that it is good to adopt this mode

from an infirmity of the French mind,
whioh has been one main cause of the
miscarriages of the French nation in its
pursuit of liberty and progress, that of
being led away by phrases and treaty
abstractions as if they were realities
which have a will and exert active
power. Hitherto the character of Eng?
lish thought has been different; it has
required propositions that express
definite facts, not vague words whioh

Marriage op Mrs. James A. Oates.?
On Sunday afternoon last, as has been
previously annonnaed. Mrs. James A.
Oates, who bad just concluded a success?
ful engagement iu St. Louis, was mar?
ried in that oity to Tracy W. Titus, her
business manager. The ceremony took
place in the parlor of the Southern
Hotel, in the presence of Mrs. Oates'
theatrical company, a number of invited
guests, including the local editorial fra?
ternity and the bride's mother, from
Kentaoky. Tho oeremony was performed
by Rev. Dr. Berkley, of the Episoopal
Church, and the bride was given away
by Mr. Jones, the Treasurer of Dobar'e
Opera House, where Mrs. Oates had
been playing. Mrs. Oates left imme?
diately afterwards for Memphis, whore
she was to commence an engagement on
Monday.
