THE DAILYjMpH(ESII. "Let our iuat Censure? ^^5jSg^BB^H^S(B^ Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY COLUMBIA, S. C, THURSDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 7, 1872. VOL. VIII?NO. 108. ? A PiiU?ajSpLrrjOT.?The Beaufort Re? publican narrates the following hazard? ous, adventure of a Fort Royal pilot, named James A. Du pong, last Monday afternoon: He wont down in the pilot boat No. 2, and boarded the wreck of the ship Energy, ashore off Hunting Island. The ship laid on a sand spit ten or twelve miles from shoro, thirty miles North of the lightship. Dupong determined to stay on board, as he had convinced him? self that the ship might bo floated, or at least a large part of her oargo saved. The other pilots were loathe to leave hitu on the wreck, as there were indica? tions of an approaohing storm. He wan, however, inflexible in his determination. ! On Tuesday, the gale inoreased, and Du? pong asserts that the Energy floated off the epit and was carried almost into-St. Helena Channel. On Wednesday, sho broke in two. His.provisions gave out on Wednesday. During the gale, Du? pong was lashed to the wreck; the waves broke ovor him constantly, and almost stripped him of clothing. On Thursday, Dupong was taken off, having voluntarily incurred a peril which most men would have given ship aud oargo to have es? caped from. ^ i ? ? . ?
