C., September 20, 1872.-The Board of Directors of the Sooth Carolina Mouument Association, encouraged by the success of the bazaar, last year, and yielding to the urgent request of a great number of persons, take pleasure in announcing that they will open a "monument restaurant" at . the fair grounds, on the first day of the fair, and will not dose their sales until after the distribution of prizes. This restaurant is entirely under the control of the Board of Directors of the associa? tion, and the Executive Committee is appointed from their number. Lunches will be served from ll A. M. till 4 P. M. Contributions of meats and poultry, as well as of money are solicited, and may be sent to either of the following ladies, who composo the Executive Com? mittee: Mrs. J. T. The editor of the Petaluma Argus has seen the drawings of a new machine for produoing perpetual motion, whioh he is confident will do away with the steam engine, and work a revolution in all branches of business requiring the ap? plication of power. By this new inven? tion railroad trains and ocean and inland steamers will be driven at a cost not ex? ceeding mills where thousands of dollars are now required; and a first-class river steamer may be propelled for twelve mi niiis for the moderate sum of $100. The editor of the Petaluma Argus has examined the matter thoroughly, and believes that, though the ignorant may ?coff and the unthoughtful deride, the invention ht.s introduced the ideas and arranged the application of known forces that will accomplish all that is olaimed. The only thing that troubles the mind of the inventor is that he may possibly have overlooked something essential in the details that oan only be discovered by putting the invention to practical use. It is greatly to be feared that his suspi? cions may prove correct Many beauti? ful schemes for produoing perpetual mo? tion, whioh have promised exceedingly well on paper, have failed to produce any motion at all when brought to a practical test EBEI?INO REM AUK.-"Happy is the eountry that has no history," as the school-boy said ou being flogged the third time for not knowing who wai Henry the Sixth's wife.-Punch.
