HEAVY WAS CLAIM.-An important
claim waa partly heard on the 16th by
the Southern Claims Commission, the
claimant being Mrs. Anna ii. Fitzbdgh,
of Fairfax County, Vi. Her farm waa
ocenpied alternately by the Confederate
and Federal forces, but she, having a
letter from General Winfield Scott, ask?
ing the army officers as a personal favor
to him to not destroy her property,
neither side did any injury. The hus?
band of the olaimant was General Wm.
Fitzhugh, for many years a State Sena?
tor of Virginia, who shortly before the
war liberated all of his slaves and pro?
vided for their oolonization in Liberia,
A number of witnesses were examined to
prove the loyalty of Mrs. Fitzhugh.
She has the order given her by Colonel
Green, then Chief of the Quartermas?
ter's Department, Who was also present

the Government needed the wood on hei
farm and intended to out it immediately,
and the witnesses testified that on 2,0(K
acres of. her land, fifty oords per acre
