THE DAILY ''Let our post Censures Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 1G, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. ITO. A Card from Senator Sawyer. To the Editor of the Cliarleston Republican. Sra: The New York Herald, of tho 11th instant, has a despatch from Columbia, S. 0., in reference to one Capt. Henry Garter, in which it is said that he was on instrument of a "most astounding plot" to entrap Gen. Moses, the "Regular" Republican candidate for Governor of this State. In this despatch, tho follow? ing language occurs: "Tho parties who aro suspected of having put up this huge job aro prominent politicians in the Bolters' faction of the Republican party -among them a Senator from this State-and thia suspicion is in part con? firmed by what has been gotten out of Carter himself." Now, as I am the only "Senator" from "this State" who baa publioly identified himself with tho "Bolters' " movemont, this undoubtedly refers to me. I simply desire to state that I never saw or heard of this man Carter, until I heard of his arrest for forgery, and that any statement that "prominent politi? cians in the Bolters' faction of the Re? publican party" in this Stato havo had any connection, correspondence or rela? tions with him whatever, is an unquali? fied falsehood. The huge job, if tbero was one, was in the interest of the Moses ticket, and its originators doubtless thought their for? geries would Bucceed in satisfying tho unwary that Gen. Grant nhd Judge Rich? ardson were in the interest of the cor? rupt men who ure trying to foist them? selves upon South Carolina as publio officers. They probably had reason to fear the exposure of the plot by honest men, and, as many a pickpocket has done, cried "stop thief," beforo publio attention could he called to them as its authors. Tho "Bolters" have no need to put up "hugo jobs" to entrap Franklin J. Moses, Jr. If the "jobs" in which he has been concerned in the past are not suffioient to secure his defeat, no blundering s?beme like this of Carter's will savo the people of Sooth Carolina from being cursed by an administration conducted by him.
