Bo shall a light that cannot fade Beam on thee from on high, And angels' voices say to thee, These things eh&U nevor die. -? ? -?-i A T'A MM EXCUSE.-Pere Hyacinthe, before writing his letter to the Temps announcing bis intended marriage, had evidently studied the following observa? tions of Jeremy Taylor on the subject of matrimony : "Marriage has in it less of beauty, but more of safety, than the single life; it hath not more ease, hut less danger; it is more merry and more sad; it is fuller of sorrows and fuller of joys; it lies under more burdens, but it is supported by all the strengths of love and charity ; and those burdens are delightful. Mar? riage is the mother of the world, and preserves kingdoms, and fills oities and ohurohes, and Heaven itself. Oelibaoy, like the fly in the heart of an apple, dwells in perpetual sweetness, but Bits alone, end is confined and dies in singu? larity; but marriage, like the useful bee, builds a house, and gathers sweetness from every flower, and labors, and unites into societies and republics, and sends out oolonies and feeds the world with delioaoies, and obeys their king, and keeps order, and exercises mauy virtues, and promotes the interest of mankind, and is that state of good to which God hath designed the present constitution of the world." INEBRIATE CURES.-Tho Pennsylvania Sanitarium, or Asylum for Inebriates, has been in operation five years, and during that time has had under its care 275 persons addicted to intoxication either by alcohol or opium. 126 of these have been citizens of Philadelphia, and a statement of results shows nine who have maintained their sobriety for four years, eleven for three years, ten for two years, eleven for ono year, and eighteen for less than one year. It is proper to observe, however, that four of the whole number have died since they left the institution-three of consump? tion and one of fever. Of the per cent age of recoveries in cases not belonging to Philadelphia, tho directors say they cannot speak with the same accuracy, from the faot that they have not the samo means of following them up and knowing their history; but satisfac? tory reports are received from many. Even if the success of suoh institu? tions were less, the rescue of only u few from the fate whioh overtakes the victim of habitual intoxication wonld deserv? the generous sympathy of the community. C., September 20, 1872.-The Board of Directors of the South Carolina Monument Association, enoonraged by the suooess of the bazaar, last year, and yielding to the urgent request of a great number of persons, take pleasure in announcing that they will open a "monument restaurant" at the fair grounds, on the first day of the fair, and will not close their sales until after the distribution of prizes.
