SHAKSPEARE A PRINTER. -Shakspeare bas successively had to sustain tho cha? racter of a school-muster, 1 nw j or, sol? dier, sailor, farmer, surgeon, and a dozen other trades and professions, and has been proved satisfactorily to the minds of several writers to have been woll versed iu alchemy, botany, music and nil the ologies. But it bas remained for i Mr. Blades, the eminent Caxtonian, to prove that Shakspeare was one of bis j own craft-a printer. In tho volume just issued by Messrs. Trubner it is clearly shown that Shakspeare, when he I first arrived in London, called upon his | fellow-townsman Field, who had married the daughter of Yantrollier, a printer, and had succeeded him in business. Here, then, Shakspeare, as press reader or ns shopman, or as both, remained fur four years, and becamo master of the terms "reprints," "title pageB," "pre? face," "typo," "nonpareil," "broad? side," "looking up," "register," aud "printer's devil," all of which are to be found in his works. An amusing anecdote is told of King, the actor, who met a friend whose name be bad forgotten, and took him home to dinner. After sevetal attempts to Mud out his name, King said: "My friend arid I have had a dispute as to how you spell your name; indeed, we have laid a bottle of wine ou it."
