THE DAILY ''Let our just Censaren PHOr?T Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. LCOLUMBIA. S. C., FRIDAY MORNING, OCTOBER ll, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 175. Tfae State Pres?. TURN OOT ON THE 16TH.-Wednesday, the 16th instant, is the day of election for State and County officers and mem? bers to Congress. Pot the last six years, our people have looked in vain from every quarter for relief from our present deplorable condition. Wo have tried apathy, we havo tried compromises, und now, in our extremity, wo must try coa- j lition. Tho opportunity expected by our people basc?me. The party which has caused all our misfortunes and sufferings ia divided. We hold tho balance of power. The side wo ally ouraelves with wins. How shall we vote? To us, it is a question of great importance; but for? tunately wo aro not. compelled to weigh the balances nicely. Tomlinsou is our mau. Howevor suspicious some of hiB aots might have been, we take him with? out hesitanoy, when Moses is tho alter? native. We do not caro anything about Mr. Tomlin8on's nativity. Wo do not stop to scrutinize his character, when his opponent is a mau who defrauded the peoplo of near $1,000,000, and who, Jo his greater disgrace and shame is a na? tive Carolinian! Vote, thou, for Tom linson and his ticket, out and out. Some? thing moro is needed in this great movement than sympathy. There must be good, hard, earnest work. The two nominees for Congress aro B. F, Ferry ami A. S. Wallace. We all know B. F. Perry, and unfortunately we know Mr. Wallace, too. Gov. Perry has always been a consistent, honest Union man, and there is no stronger friend to the people than ex-Qov.- Perry. He has been tried; so has Wallace. In Spartan burg, we do not think it necessary either to praise the one or oondemn the other do that on the 16th. \Spartanburg Spartan. THE TWO TICKETS- TOMKINSON AND MOSES.-That there is very great apathy on the subject of tho State election is very apparent, and the causes are equal? ly apparent-1st. .The impression that there ia very little ohoice in favor of the Tomlinsou ticket; and, 2d. That it has developed too little strength to guaran? tee its success even with the aid of D?? mocratie votes. There is certainly very little in the ticket to arouse our enthu? siasm, and much less in the face of an? ticipated defeat. Nevertheless there is a choioe in its favor, and recent develop? ments in the upper and lower Counties of the State, seem to indicate a chance of its success, if tho white people of the State will turn ont in its behalf. [Abbeville Press and Banner. THE Two TICKETS-WHAT ARE WE TO Do?-Our people, when they reach the polia, will have to decide for themselves. Wo believe that if the conservative vote throughout the State be oast for Reuben Tomlinsou, the candidate of the true Republicans, bis chances of election will be largely augmented; on the other hand, if thrown for Moses will be doubly sure. We have no advice or counsel to offer in reaching a conclusion; bat upon gene? ral principles the less of two evils, when presented, should always bo chosen. I Greenville Enterprise. By advices from Calcutta wo are in? formed that Russian troops were advanc? ing on Khiva and Kandar on the 27th of August, and that the soldiers of the Czar had previously occupied Urgenj and razed it to the ground. There aro two towns named Urgenj in the dominion of the Kahn of Khiva. One is situated on the banks of a caual near tho Oxus; the other some miles North-west of Khiva. The first enjoyed great commercial im? p?rtanos at one period, and is, no doubt, the objeotive point of the present march of tho soldiers of the Northern Empe? ror. The movement is of very great j importance. Russia wishes, it may be, to seize the great Eastern hive of manu? facture for Bilk, cotton and yarn, and thus become, to a very great extent, in? dependent of the looms of Franco and England, besides obtaining a good stra? tegic foothold for her armies in the event of a war dash with the power of Britain in the East. The plaza of St. Augustine, Fla., is to be illuminated by four candles. The city government is getting extravagant. Copartnership Notice. MR. JULIAN O.
