Mus. LAURA D. FAIR-THE ? 'WOMAN IN
BLACK."-The San Francisco Chronicle,
of September 10, gives the following de?
scription of "the woman in black," as
she is now called, Mrs. Laura D. Fair,
? on the occasion of her appearance in
oonrt, on her second trial for the murder
of A. P. Crittenden, now in progress in
San Francisco. The Chronicle says:
As Mrs. Fair came in, the crowd made
a passage way, through which abo walked
with a firm step. She was dressed, as
nsnal, in deep black-black silk dress,
black hat and veil, and black gloves.
Everything was black except her faoe,
which was BS white as Parian marble.
Her golden curls trailed down through
the folds of her sombre veil, and seemed
like rays of sunlight streaming through
a blackened cloud. She seated herself
at the lawyers' table, anti, resting her
head on her hand, seemed lost in a sad,
sad reverie. In the opening proceedings,
she took no interest whatever. She sat
with her eyes on the floor, and only lift?
ed them when her counsel tamed to her
to make some remark. Her veil was
kept down closely over her faoe, and her
features were almost entirely hidden
from the eager, ourious gaze of the
orowd. Later in the day, when the
names of the jurors were called, she
manifested a slight degree of interest;
bot when, one after another, they were
excused, because they entertained opi?
nions, she seemed to gather from the
circumstance a knowledge of how little
sympathy there was in the cold, hard
faces about her. For awhile she listened,
but soon sank back in her chair, evident?
ly disheartened and depressed. Once
she smiled when listening to the ques?
tioning of an idiot, who was on the
stand under examination as to his qualifi?
cations to sit on the jory, but it waa a
sickly, mournful smile, and passed away
as quickly as it carno. Sitting apart from
the prominent actress in the scono was
another elder lady. She, too, was at?
tired in black, and looked sad and sor?
rowful. This was the mother of Mrs.
Fair. She had come into court before
Mrs. Fair, but when tho latter entered,
she did not notice her. Neither spoke
to the other, and both sat apart, silent
and alone.
It was after a long day in India that
Sir Henry Smith drew up to allow his
command to march past him into their
quarters. The infantry were the first to
arrive, and to them Sir Henry said, "Ahl
the infantry; yes, you are the infantry;
?es, the foot soldier is a luoky fellow,
'he infantry boy for me; none of oar
nasty horses to olean. Qet into oamp,
lie down, eat; there yoa aro. Yes, tho
infantryman is a lucky fellow." And so
they passed. Not long after, the cavalry
came np, whereupon Sir Henry ad?
dressed them, too, in tarn: "Ah! the
cavalry; yes, the cavalry. Aha! you are
the boys; you are the lneky fellows; none
of your foot-sore, tired, dusty infantry
men, but a smart ohap with a horse, a
real gentleman; yes, you are the fellows
for me, fresh as larks; that's it; go along.
The cavalryman is a luoky fellow."
