VIH-^NO IV?} An upas tree has recently been shipped from Madagascar fer thc Botanical Gar-1 den in Paris, where it ia expected to ar? rive shortly. It will be the only speci? men of ita kind in France. The old le? gend connected with the upas treo was that it exhaled from ita foliage a deadly vapor, and that when the weary traveler, attracted by its beauty, would seek shel? ter from the parching 'heat beneath its cool, umbrageous shade, he would fall a speedy victim tb its fatal exhalations. Thin story is entirely erroneous in fact, and the London Echo says, iu reference to tho upas tree Boon to be planted in Paris: "Admirers of the clever picture in tho International Exhibition of this year, which represents the deadly upas tree surrounded by the bodies of its vic? tims, muy expeot to seo that grass plot strewn with skeletous wearing high heels and paniers, but, happily,' the upas tree of real lifo differs widely, from the upas tree of tradition. GnowiH OF AN AMERICAN CITY.-Tho growth of Broklyn during the last thirty years, exhibits the vast population that must crowd into New York. Brooklyn is an outgrowth of the latter city, is composed of inhabitants that have been, as it were, squeezed ont of it, and is a vast intumesoecoe that is growing faster than ita feeder. Its cens?a for the last forty years shows: In 1830, 17,000. in 1840, 47,000; in 1850, 130.000; in I860, 260,000; in 1870, 400,000.
