Among the brief items of news from Japan by the lost steamer was the state? ment that the Mikado had his photo? graph taken, and that the picture was Bolling for fifty cents a oopy. This may seem an insignificant bit of intelligence, bat it means a great deal in Japan, i where taking any drawing, limning ! sculpture, or other portrait of the Son of Heaven has been punishable, with death. For centuries untold tho Mikado, as a j divine being, has been exempt from sit? ting for bis portrait; and when, a few months ago, a cunning Gorman artist suooceded in gutting a negative of a great public ceremonial in which the Mikado figured, a great panic ensued; the kingdom was turned upside down, and no peacu was had until every copy of the picture, and the negativo itself, in which the imperial face was no larger I thau a pin's head, was destroyed.
