There are many Farinas at Oologne, all
of whom, of course, claim to be the real
manufacturers of the charming perfume
named after that city. ? French gentle?
man, who was recently there, being anx?
ious to obtain a few bottles of tho cele?
brated eau-de-Cologne, entered into the
handsomest of three fine shops, all pre?
tending to sell the genuine perfume.
After making a pu rob ase, he conjured
the master to say whether he was indeed
the real Farina. The shop-keeper seem?
ed greatly embarrassed, bat at last con
fessed that he was not, and that the real
Farina kept the shop on the other side
of the street. The gentleman thanked,
him for bis candor, and immediately
made another purchase at the shop in?
dicated. The next- day the Frenchman,
happening to pass through the street
with a native of Cologne, related his ad?
venture, and was not a little astonished
when his friend exclaimed: "The rascal!
Why the shop he recommended you to
is a branch establishment of his own."
The only lotter addressed to Shake?
speare, which is undoubtedly genuine, is
that now. in the museum at Stratford,
from Richard Quiny, actor, asking for a
loan of ?20. It may help those who
wish to know the correct way of spelling
the" poet's name, to hear that this letter
is endorsed: "To my loveinge good
friend and countreyman, Mr. William
Shaokespere, deliver Thees."
