A CITY OP WOMEN.-lu the oentral
part of the capital city of Bandkok, in
Siam, reside about 9,000 women, among
whom no man but the king may enter.
The inhabitants of this inner city are the
1,000 women of the royal harem, and
some 8,000 more, who are soldiers, arti?
ficers and slaves. This little world is
ruled by women as magistrates, who ad?
minister the laws of the kingdom.
There is no appeal from their decisions.
If a disturbance arises, it is suppressed
by a foroe of 500 Amazons, trained from
infanoy to the use of sword and spear.
Meanwhile the slave women carry on a
variety of manufactures, or go outside
the walls to till the fields. The women
of higher birth are "sealed" to the king;
the slave women may marry, but their
husbands dwell outside the walls. The
children, if boys, are banished from tbe
oity of women at six years old; only the
girls remain. All the Oriental distinc?
tions of rank are scrupulously observed
within this strange realm, except that
tho magistrates are chosen for personal
oharaoter and wisdom.
"See there!" exclaimed aman who had
just had a contest with a fleeing burglar,
to a gaping crowd, as ho pointed with
some pride and a deal of nervousness
to a bullet hole through the crown of his
hat. "Look at the hole, will yon? You
see that if this bad been a low-crowned
hat, I should have been killed outright."
Tho remark of a fashionable lady that
when she was a poor girl and lived in the
country, she used to "plant corn in her
bare feet," throws Borne light upon the
origin of those troublesome things.
