A letter from the New York Herald cor?
respondent, accompanying tho Indian
Investigating Commissioners, states that
everything BO far indicates a complete
failure of the peace policy towards the
Indians. Even some of tho Quaker
agents are calling for troops. At a re?
cent oounoii held with the Kiowas, who
are head aentres of all the troubles, they
openly boasted of outraging two young
girls, whom they captured lant spring ia
Texas, after killing their father and
mother, but whom they returued two
weeks ago, in a horrible condition, ex?
pecting to receive a heavy peouuiary
ransom, but did not reoeive a cent. They
retained a little brother of the girls, and
the agent refuses to issue them any more
rations until he ia released. At thin
oonnoil tho Kiowas demanded that the
whites should release the Chiefs Santana
and Big Tree, and that all the whites
should retire from tho entire country be?
tween the Mississippi and Bio Grande
Bi vers, in return for which all tho Go?
vernment stock and captives plundered
by them should be given up by them
and peace maintained. A grand council
of all the tribes was arranged for the
2d of September, but the Quaker agentB
say tho patohed-up peaoe now will only
last till next spring.
An exohange says: "Mrs. Livermore,
Mrs. Luoy Stone, Mrs. Howe, Mrs.
Beeoher Stowe, Mrs. Lidia Maria Child,
Grace Greenwood, Mrs. Clemmer AmeB,
Mrs. Stanton, Miss Anthony and Mrs.
Hooker, are all earnestly in favor of the
olootion of Grant." If the shrieking of
these miserable old women won't defeat
Grant, it is hardly worth while for any?
body else to try.
