COTTON IN THE EAST.-The cotton in? dustries of ludia baye beeu illustrated by a complete collect i ou deposited in the South Kensington Art Exhibition, in London. The articles chiefly conao from the Bombay District, which ib the cbief cotton market of India. The general plan of the collection bas been BO ar? ranged aa to illustrate every stage of the cultivation, growtb, treatment, salo and manufacture of cotton. Thus, speci? mens of the different soils and of tbe various manures used are given. A large map of India bas also been prepared, showing, by various colors, the chief cotton districts, and their relative pro? ducts and qualities. A large proportion of the ootton grown in India-probably about 750,000 bales-is retained in the country for homo consumption; the an? nual exports amounting to 1,400,000 baleB, of which over 1,000,000 bales are shipped from Bombay. The cotton is used in India for stuffing beds and pil? lows, for making quilts and for padding coats. A certain quantity is consumed for lump-wioke, for staffing saddles, for trappings, harness and ropeB, and for many purposes almost impossible to imagine. The greater quantity is, of course, spun and weaved to make the clothing demanded by depopulation of 200,000,000 souls. A NEW Daua.-The Galaxy for August says: "A new drag, obtained from the eucalyptus globulns, or blue-gum tree, is Anding much favor among foreign phy? sicians as a remedy in intermittent fevers. The tree is a native of Austra? lia, but is now cultivated in Corsica and the South of Europe. The whole of the tree, according to Dr. Oarlotti, is strong? ly impregnated .with febrifugal proper? ties. He has used leaves, bark and wood with success. Tbe drug is also re? commended as a tonio and stimulant, has been need in bronchitis with favorable results, and is valuable as an antiseptic application to wounds. Cigars made of the leaves of this plant are Baid by Prof. McLean to be Becoud only to morphia for allaying pain, calming irritation and procuring sleep in cases of ohest aneur? ism and tbe asthma incident to heart dis? ease. The eacalyptns has been an? alyzed by Professors Vauquelin and Lei oiana, who report, besides other matters, the presence of an alkaloid strongly sim? ilar to quinine." ^ ? ? Mrs. Charlotte Lamb has been arrest? ed at Trumbull, Pierce County, Wis., and placed in the Ellsworth jail, charged with poisoning flvo person?, several of whom have since died. A drunken man suffocated at Bergen Point, N.J., recently, by fulling down with his fuco in tho sand. Wanted.
