RULES FOB TRAVELERS.-On arriving at a hotel, always insist on being served with a room first, no matter bow mauy are before yon. ? proper show of indignation at be? ing assigned a room above the second flight, may impress people with an ides of your consequence. After ringing tho bell, if a servaut does not appear in ten seconds, ring again; these hotel servants must be taught to be quicker. At the dinner-table give your order to the servant by instalments-that is, Bend him out as many times as possible, and each time for the fewest articles. Tbis will keep him at work exclusively for yourself, and teach others a wholesome lesson of patience. If the express neglects to bring yoar loggage, stop down and curso the hotel clerk for it. Ask him "why in thunder" that expressman "hasn't brought your trunk? Of course the clerk ought to know, and really be considered some? what to blame for it; at any rate, he is the most convenient man to bo "pitched into." The shorter the time you intend to stay, the more fuss it ie necessary to make about everything. If you are a cheap clerk on a tbree-day excursion, brag about Saratoga at New port, or vice versa. Throw in all the know? ing wine talk possible, and ask about the drives, and "what accommodations there are here for a gentleman's horses." Anything you. don't like about the watering places abuse tho hotel clerk for it. As?: him why he don't have a new handle to the town pump, or what the deuce the reason is the street-crossings are not better. If at the seaside, frown at him when the water is too cold, and pitch into him about the weather there when it rains; he ought to arrange these things differently. A skillful course of growling, grum? bling, and expressed dissatisfaction at everything to clerks, waiters and serv? ants, interepersed with some judiciously applied profanity will huve astonishing effect, and may succeed in impressing an idea of your importance upon the whole establishment, which undoubtedly would have perished but for the two days you graciously bestowed upon it. CURIOSITIES OP THE DEAD LETTER OFFICE.-It is officially stated that 3,000,000 letters went to the Dead Let? ter Office last year, and that they con? tained a sum exceeding $3,000,000 in money, drafts, oheoks, &o. $92,000 of this was in oash. It is estimated that on an average every letter that goes into that offioe loseB a dollar to some one. 58,000 letters had no County or State direotion, 400,000 lacked stamps, and 3,000 were posted without any address at all. What a commentary is this on the absent-mindedness and vaga? ries of our population. Fart of the mistakes nris9, no doubt, from igno? rance and from weak-mindod persons, and a good many from that mental absorption characteristic of our intensely active people. Of the ?100,000 letters going to the Dead Letter Offioe for the want of stumps, a portion, probably, were stamped, and Uncle Sam's imper? fect glue would not stick. Curious ro? mances might be woven out of the lost letters. The extraordinary facts thus officially reported ought to have the effect of making our people more careful in stamping, addressing and mailing their letters. The coroner's office is an unpromising place for slang. A recent San Francisco paper says: "At an inquest recently held by Coroner Stillman, a hoodlum was in? troduced as a witness, and, after being sworn, tho fellow proceeded to relate his story in the genuine hoodlum dialect and style, but was suddenly stopped by the coroner, who told the young man that he must not employ hoodlum slang in his presence, but to nse good English if he knew how to do so. The witness changed his style, but found it uphill work to finish his statement as the coro? ner directed." In the coarse of excavations at Capon, a prize vase has recently been found, which was won at the gymnastic sports at Athens, in the year 392 B. C. The skeleton that lay in the tomb beside it is probably that of tho winner. There is a mountain in North Georgia which bas the "vernal belt" on its East? ern side.
