EGYPT.-The following ie tbe official
statement of this affair :
ALEXANDRIA, July 14,1872.-To Gene?
ral C. P. Stone, Chief-of-Staff-GENERAD:
Ou tho eveniDg of the 12th instant,
being late in the city, myself and two
offiaers, Colonel Alick Boyuokls and
Major Campbell, dined together. After
wo had dined, and on passing out, we
sainted, in the politest manner possible.
Mr. Butler, tho Consul-General of the
United Statos, who was dining in the
sumo Baloon. We had all passed into
the street, when the Oonsul-General,
Mr. Butler, called repeatedly to Major
Campbell, in the most extraordinary and
offensive manner. The Major turned
towards Mr. Butler, to learn the cause
of bis trouble, and asked why ho ad?
dressed him in so offensive a manner.
The Consul said to him, "I wish to see
yon, sir," and rising from his chair,
rushod upon the Major, inflicting blows,
which were returned. At the outset,
and boforo Butler bad left his scat, a
man by the namo of Wadleigh, tho com?
panion and employee of tho Consul,
seated near bim at tho samo table, rose
simultaneously with him, drawing his
pistol ut the same tima, and exclaiming,
"Lot us commence tho work!" or words
to that effoot, and instantly bogan firing
at tho Major, the Consul exclaiming,
"Give it to him, Wadleigh!" It was in
the evening, but light enough to see all
the movements. Tho man Wadleigh,
after firing five or six shots at the Major
-ono of which took effect, badly wound?
ing him in the leg, endangering its loss,
if not his life-ran into the dining-room,
in the direction of tho baok door, and
the affair ceased here. I did all I oould
to prevent its continuance, while the
Consnl-General was doing everything in I
his power to canse the death of- Major
Campbell. After that whioh I have re?
lated, and believing the Consnl-General
the sole canse of this affair, and being
convinced that he designed, with the
persons then with him, to take the life
of Major Campbell, I went to the office
of the Chief of Police, to find ont if there
was any possibility of having the assas?
sins arrested. The Consul followed me
to the office with these men, and here
refused to allow the arrest of Wadleigh.
When I demanded hie arrest, ho (Wad?
leigh) stepped baok slightly in the rear
of Mr. Butler and pnt his hand npon his
pistol, evidently with the intention of
drawing it, bnt was prevented by tho
police present. I then asked not only
that he be arrested, bnt that he should
be placed in irons. At this stage, But?
ler said that he would arrest him and be
responsible for him, bnt could not pnt
his friend in irons. These are the facts,
briefly told, as they came to my imme?
diate knowledge. While at the police
office, Mr. Strologo, one of Mr. Butler's
companions, throughout the whole af?
fair, voluntarily informed me that he en?
deavored to dissuade Butler and Wad?
leigh from making the attack; but he
oonld not do so, showing that the whole
affair was a premeditated thing to mur?
der Major Campbell. Before the Chief
of Police could get there, I was com?
pelled to leave bis office with Major
Campbell, in search of medical aid, as
he was bleeding profusely from his
wound.

WHY LOOAN IS FOR GRANT.-Senator
Logan having been gazetted to speak in
Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Ne tea ex?
plains why Logan is for Grant:
1. There is a band of Indians in the
North-west called the Tent?n Sioox.
They compriso about 30 lodges, 250 war?
riors, drones, squaws, and papooses, all
told. Their chief is Sitting Bull.
2. This little band has recently been
on the war path, approached the pro?
posed line of the North Pacific Railroad,
and run off a few head of stock, and noti?
fied the surveyors that they were op?
posed to the building of the railroad.
Snob, at least, is the pretext and rumor,
probably without foundation, and origi?
nating with interested parties. Upon
the strength of this rumor there was em?
bodied in the Indian appropriation bill a
section appropriating $500,000 "for the
pacification of the Tent?n Sioox."
3. To the total surprise of the "In?
dian ring," and the parties who procured
this appropriation to be mado, ono Maj.
Wham, a friend, protege, and jackal of
Gen. Logan, was appointed to the duty
of "pacifying the Teuton Sioux," and
was made the almoner of the $500,000
appropriated for that purpose.
4. For the pacification of this little
pack of red-skinned boree thieves, the
sum of $25,000 would have been amply
sufficient, giving every warrior in the
band at least $400 in money. But we
will allow that $50,000 was needed for
this purpose, or say $800 to eaoh Indian.
Still there is the sum of $450,000 out of
the $500,000 that is a clear, undoubted,
flagrant fraud, an open robbery of the
Treasury, without excuse, warrant or jus?
tification.
The reader with half an eye can see
why Logan, who was moro hostile to
Grant than any other Senator, is now so
favorable to hin re-eliotioo. He has
"been seen."
HEAVY. DRY GOODS IMPORTATIONS.
$6,000,000 of dry goods in a single week
is a heavy importation, and indicates
either extraordinary extravagance or a
vast expansion of wealtb among the peo?
ple of the oonntry. With all this, gold la?
bors hard against the efforts of specula?
tors to push it up, and the foreign ex?
changes are fully one per cent, below
tho specie shipping point. Old Adam

forced to the task of solving the present
curions problems in our gold and monoy
market.
"Every man who hates rebels" was in?
vited to be present at the colored mon's
meeting in Detroit Friday night. Eighty
men and fourteen women were all the

THE COLUMBIA PLUNDERERS.-From
South Carolina we have reports that the I
oarpet-bag leaders are quarreling [
among themselves, and that an inde?
pendent Republican ticket will probably
be nominated in opposition to that of j
the ring. If men of known good char?
acter oan be found and placed on such a
ticket, the white inhabitants of South
Carolina will no doubt willingly givo it]
their support, and, with tho aid of tho |
moro intelligent and honest of tho ne?
groes, might reasonably hopo to carry
the State. The greatest obstacle would
lie in the frauds of the election officers,
some of whom, it may bc remembered,
wero sout to the penitentiary two years
ago, for just a trifle overdoing business
in the Beaufort District. Certain it is
that there is now great wrangling and
that exposures are coming out of the
modus operandi of the great robberies of
the Scott ring.-iveie York Tribune.

stands out in worse light yet, yiowed
through the Herald's despatch from that
Stato in to-day's issue. If no positive |
dishonesty were intended by the Finan?
cial Board in hypothecating the capital?
ists in New York $7,000,000 of bonds, is?
sued simply for the conversion of old
State paper, the readiness with \>hich
these men, who believe in their own ir?
responsibility, plunged into illegality,
shows the utter recklessness and want of
principle among them. The aggrieved
bond-holders should prosecute.

THE RADICAL WAY OF CONDUCTING THE
CAMPAIGN.-The Radical journals are
beginning to oonduot the campaign on
the prinoiple of "no case; abuse the op?
posing attorney." To defend the record
of Qen. Grant is becoming a hopeless
task. In all the disparagement of Mr.
Greeley, so . lavishly bestowed, there is
one thing that has remained unim
pugned-his honesty. The American
people, o race principally of agricultural
dwellers in the fresh fields and sombre
woods, where morality is supposed to be
more nncontaminated than in the larger
cities; and of merchants, the very life of
whose daily business is strict, fair deal?
ing, would be wise if they elected the
opponent of Gen. Grant, if for no other
reason than his conceded honesty. The
corruption in our present Administra?
tion has spread so widely, has fastened
itself BO firmly already on the body poli?
tic, that, in foqr years moro on the same
rale, the popular mind would be gradu?
ally debauched, a lower standard of
morals would be easily tolerated in our |
Government officials, and the danger,
that now only threatens ns, become im?
possible to avert. Tba remedy to be j
applied on the ?th of next March will
work an effective cure.
