THE DAILY "Let our just Censures Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. 0., WEDNESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 7, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 119. THE JESUITS.-The Spectator thus no tioes the protest made by the English Kornau Catholics, referred to io our colamos of the Slat of July: "The Bo man Oatholios had a meeting on -Tues? day to express sympathy with the Joe u ita in the perseootion to which they are being exposed in Germany, the Dake of Norfolk in the ohair. The Earl of Den? bigh moved that the action of the Ger? man Legislature, which had expelled the Jesuitsaud other teaohing orders from ita territory, 'without proving or even alleg? ing any illegal act against them, is a wrong done to all national right, and an injury inflicted on the Catholics of all nations.' Lord Denbigh said that 'the Jesuits had been held up as intriguers, but that those who knew them well knew that it was distinctly against the consti? tution of their order to mix themselves up in any intrigue.' Does Lord Den? bigh mean to apply that historically as well as to the Jesuits of the present day? We imagine the history of the Gunpow? der Plot shows that at that time they did mix themselves up with very bloody in? trigues, while usually professing to know little or nothing about them. But we quite agree with Lord Denbigh, that in? dividual orimes, and not a few of them, should be proved againsC the order, be? fore this sort of wholesale legislation against it can be deemed anything but flagrant injustice as well as folly. The Jesuits are often enough the best 'men of the world' in the Catholic Church, and it is not the beat men of the world who indulge themselves in the diversion of plotting against empires and over? setting thrones." No rule of three calcula? tion will determine what the jecond man is worth, so they have taken to the rules of the court to settle it.
