ANOTHER RETUBMOAN IJEADBR DE nr.AHM FOB GREELEY.-The rumora of the defection of General Banks from the support of Grant and Wilson are eon firmed by the following letter: BOSTON, July 31, 1872. MY DEAR SIB: I have the honor to acknowledge by this note, in addition to oar conversation to-day, the receipt of ?onr invitation to address the citizens of jynn, on Thursday evening, in support of the re-election of President Grant and the policy of his administration. No invitation could have greater weight with me from any part of the country, nor from any portion of my fellow-citi? zens, and it gives me great pleasure to assure you that nothing oould be added to your suggestions as the representa? tive of the citizens of Lynn to induce me to aooedo to your request. Their kindness to me many years sinoe is a continuing life remembrance, and no? thing would give me greater satisfaction than to renew my associations with them, but I regret to say that I am not iu accord with them in regard to the Presidential canvass. Against my wishes and my personal interests, I am oom polled to believe and to say that the per? petuation of the prcsont polioy of the Government is not for the advantage of the country, and that it will not tend to establish its former good and prosperity, nor to promote the interests of any olass of citizens. No. personal feeling of any form or character enters into this judg ment. It is in view of general prinoi ?>les and public interests alone that I am ed to this conclusion. The uniting of the masses of the people of all parties sections and raoes in support of the grand results of the war is indispensable to the permanent establishment of the general recognition of those results. It can be secured by no other means. Wo shall all be foroed to this conclusion sooner or later. United action upon thia basis has been the hope of my life I fervently desired it during the war, and in the reconstruction of the Statee subsequent to the war. I believe that is now tendered in good faith in the nomi nation of Mr. Greeley, and, for one, I cannot rejeot it. It is what I desired, and its consummation, although sudden and startling, does not alarm me. My duty to myself and my country requires me to give him my support. I cannot advocate before your friends a different course, which neither my judgment nor my heart approves. It grieves me most deeply to separate my' se)f in thought or action from any one of those with whom I have been solong associated, and to whom I am so greatly indebted; but I believe that the result will justify my action, give to the coun? try that peace and prosperity whioh is the object of all our labors, and secure to every oitizen oivil and political equa? lity, and the freedom whian was won by the sacrifico of so many Valued lives. THE NSW YOBS TRIBUNE AND THE BA DIOALS.-One of the amusing develop? ments of the political campaign is the dilemma in whioh the Republican papers are placed by the attitude of the New York Tribune. That paper, in times past, was the journalistic milch cow from which all the other papers drew their sustenance in the way of argument for their cause. But now they get no? thing but hard knocks from the lost leader, and the "blockheads" who edit them are in a woful plight over the mat? ter. But in order to remedy this mis? fortune, and to supply oampaign "points" for the disconsolate Grant edi toff, an editorial bureau has been estab? lished to furnish, broadcast, editorials on tho "patent insides" principle, where? with to fill the barren columns of the Grant papers, and to manufacture public opinion for Grant. The New York Tri? bune managed to obtain possession of one of these "editorials"-already set np in type and ready for distribution-snd published a few ohoioe extracts from it, showing how universal ruin will follow Mr. Greeley's election, and how it would be far, far better for tho country and the world that the sea-should swallow the mountains, and that other similar catas? trophes should occur, than that the farmer of Ohappaqua should oross the threshold of the White House as its oe oupant for four years. The Tribune, at the same time, remarked that it would probably see this artiole, with all its so? phomoric fustian and nonsense, in some Grant paper; and, sure enough, within two or three days, it made its appear ance in a Pennsylvania Radical sheet From the style of these patent "edito rials," it is very evident that the edito? rial bureau will not succeed in filling the {dace of tho Tribuue, and that the phi - osophers add statesmen who prepare the articles have mistaken their vocation. SOLON JOHNSON TN NEW YORK. -Among | the speakers at a Greeley and Brown ra? tification meeting ic New York, Tuesday night, attended by about 5,000 persons, was Solon Johnson, a well known colored I man from Virginia. He said that he was satisfied that every State in the South and West where corrupt influences | were not employed would give a majori? ty sufficient to place Mr. Greeley in the White House next Maroh. Said he: "You do not know how we suffer in tho South through the nets of the present Administration. Tho parasites in the public offioes of tho South are bleeding the people, aod the only way to get rid of them is to overthrow the Administra? tion and elect Mr. Greeley. The tele? graph operators of the South, after sun Bet on the 5th of November, will give ! forth the joyous news of the election of an honest man." Names are sometimes deceptive. Doo? little is a very hard political worker, if ho does labor for Greeley, and Gol. Coward, of South Carolina, was one of the bravest soldiers in the war of the re? bellion.- Chicago Times. Mayor Hall, of Now York, had the novel experience, the other day, of sign? ing a warrant for $5,000 to pay Wheeler H. Peckham for prosecuting him.
