SHOCKING MURDEH IN EDOEFIELD
COUNTY.-A correspondent of the Edge
field] Advertiser furnishes the following
particular? of a horrid murder commit?
ted last Thursday, near J. M. Harrison's,
in the neighborhood of Gilgal, the vic?
tim being a colored woman, who was
enciente at the time of the brutal deed :
The parties wore all colored. The
man's name is John Mitchell, and the
murdered woman's was Sarah Kemp, all
living and working on the plantation of
Mr. Harrison. Mitchell and this woman
had a falling ont abont the crop, late in
the afternoon of Thursday, the 25th
instant, and Mitchell having a large claw
hammer in his hand, strnok her over the
head, knooking her down, and never
ceasing nntil he bad beaten her head and
face in a frightful manner. Her skull
was broken through in several places.
He then concealed the body, and after
nightfall, took it upon his horse and car?
ried it two miles off, hiding it away in a
dismal swamp, where he thought the eye
of man would never penetrate. The
woman being soon missed, suspicion was
aroused, and the husband of the deceased
asked Mitchell if he had seen anything
of his wife, and was informed by him
that she had gone down tho road that
evening in search of the cows. The
next morning, the husband of the de?
ceased went in the direction indiicated
by Mitchell, and found the hammer with
which the murder had been 'committed,
nlljclottod with blood, and blood upon
tho ground near by. Bnspeoting fool
play, ho took the hammer, returned to
the house, and informed the other freed?
men of it. Suspicion fell upon Mitchell,
who, being aoonsed, owned that the
hammer was his, and then that "small
voice"-the voioe of oonsoienoe-spoke
to him iu tones that startled him to the
enormity of his crime, and he at once
made a full confession, and told where
the body could be found. He was at
once tskeff'ftitQ custody, and it was with
great difficulty the colored people could
be kept from lynohing him by hanging
him to the nearest tree.
THU GENEROSITY OF GREELEY.-In
speaking of Mr. Greeley's kindness and
goodness of heart, we take pleasure in
recording a fact whioh occurred in
Greenville, shortly after the surrender
of '-General Johnston. The Bev. Mr.
Gwiu, a Baptist clergyman, living near
this, had taken from him by the Federal
raids two horses and other property. He
was a poor man, snd wrote an aooount
of the raid and robbery for the Tribune.
Mr. Greeley received and read his com?
munication, and in return sent him a
draft for $2001 Now this shows the
heart of the man. What a contrast be?
tween this act of charity and those
bloody expressions of diabolical revenge,
uttered by General Grant's Seoretary of
the Treasury, the other day at the public
meeting in North Oarolina. He said the
bloody ohasm between the North and
South had yet to be filled with other
carcasses! This mau was sent to North
Oarolina by General Grant, to advocate
his re-election to the Presidency 1 How

bosom, assist in elevating snob a milita?

[Greenville Enterprise.
In the Oarolinas it is a 'literal fact that
any man, white or colored, can vote for
Grant without let or hindrance, and
without any fear of personal violenoe or
abuse from any quarter. But in very
many places where there is a large negro
population under unscrupulous white
leaders, no man can speak or vote for
Greeley without sneers and insults, and
no oolored mau can do so without danger
to life or limb. The bayonet backs up
the semi-savage : mob who terrorize the
whole community, and if a man, espe?
cially a oolored man, is not willing to
vote for Grant as against Greeley, he
must either stay away from the polls or
take the oonsequences. And all the
elections are managed and returned by
tools of the robber ring. If the Ameri?
can people wish to save the country, let
them do it by such overwhelming ma?
jorities in those States where the people
are free, that the two Oarolinas, and es?
pecially South Oarolina, will be made to
count but as a drop for oppression
against an ocean for freedom.
