Naval officer Hardman is orating at
$16 per day and found, down in North
Carolina, several hundred miles nearer
Dixie's land than he dared to go during
the war.- That little skedaddle he made
out ot Fredorioksburg, during his brief
butter operations in old Virginia, early
one morning, brought his aotive fighting
career to a speedy termination. Then
he contrived to get ordered ont West,
into Ohio, where he fanoied the wioked
rebels would not appear. But so soon
as there was a ohance for a fight, ho ma?
naged to get ordered to New Hampshire
on a political mission. He was court
martialed, no doubt muoh to his own
gratification, and would have been
drummed ont of the ssrviae as a coward
and braggart, but for the interference
of his patron, Ex-Oov. Gilmore. The
negroes down in the old North State
ought to know what kind of scalawags
are sent to teach them whom to vote for.
Gen, Joo Abbott and Gen. Henry Wilson
have no better military reputations.
The first gained abont all his laurels at
Tortugas, safo in a fort; and Wilson,
truo to his cowardly gipaey blood, got a
commission as Colonel of the Massachu?
setts 22d, and resigned it in favor of
Col. Jesso A. Gove, of this city, so soon
as his little experience at Bull Bun satis?
fied him that the rebels "meant busi?
ness." Then, as Chairman of the Senate
Military Committee, he proved a leaky

Virginia, and was really responsible for
Gol. Cove's death at Fair Oaks. What
a pity Wilson had not been in that brave
officer's place, with the scalawags Harri

Edgefield, on Saturday last, "went for"
the scalawags with gloves off, and said,
"when I see a Carolina white man mak?
ing believe he is a Republican, I know
right straight that he is a lying hypo?
crite, and only wants to fool us colored
men, and cajole ns to vote for him, and
put bim into office. In slavery times I
always did despise low down "buckra
men," and now whenever I see one of
the honeyed tongue, home raised white
folks stalking around as a Republican, I
always think of them poor buokras of
slavery time-and I aint got no uso for
'em now, henceforth and forever."
That fellow's hoad is "mighty level,"
and has an eminently correct apprecia?
tion of tho true status of the so-oalled
South Carolina Republican, when he
olasses him with anything that he con?
ceives vile and contemptible.
COLORED MEN THAT MEAN BUSINESS.
We expected that the Greeley and Brown
ticket would find some adherents among
the oolored people of Florida, but we
were not prepared to see so many of the
prominent Republicans among them
avow their preferences so distinctly in
behalf of Horaoe Greeley and B. Gratz
Brown. They are forming Greeley and
Brown . dubs, reading campaign docu?
ments, discussing the subject among
?heir friends, and refuse the "forty
acres and a mule" argument of those
I who have so long deoeived and hum?
bugged them. They, like ourselves,
''care for no better Republican, and no
better men than Horaoe Greeley and B.
Gratz Brown.-Jacksonville Republican.
The Elizabeth town News tells this:
"The other evening little Annie Albert,
aged two-and-a-half years, daughter of
Joseph J. Albert, according to custom,
on lying down to sleep, requested her
little sister Carrie to kneel with her and
say their prayers. Annie repeated 'Now
I lay me down to sleep,' &o., and at its
conclusion, oontinned: 'Now, Lord,
bless pa an' ma, an' Terrie, an' all my
'ittle aunties an' uncles, an' all my 'ittle
s'eethearts-just then a wioked fly lit on
ber nose, vigorously slapping at it
shoo, fly, don't bovver me-amen I' "
A yoong man from Cleveland, Ohio,
whose clothes were found in a boat some
time ago, and who by that token was
supposed drowned, has been heard from
in Europe, in company with a young
school teacher, who eloped with him,
and a large sum of money, obtained by
forging his father's name.
Two neighbors living in Winchester

mous litigation about a small spring,
which they both claimed. The judge,
wearied oat with the case, at last said:

lawyers, "when I inform you that the
parties are both milk-men I" The roar
of laughter whioh followed, proved that
the entire audience saw the point.
Slightly sarcastic was the clergyman,
who paused and addressed a man coming
into ohuroh after the sermon had beguu,
with the remark: "Glad to see yon, sir;
come in; always glad to see those here
late who can t come early." And de?
cidedly self-possessed was the man thus
addressed in the presence of an aston
ished congregation, as he responded
"Thank you; would yon favor me with
the text?"
"Why do you oharge for publishing
notices of marriages and deaths?" This
question was asked of an editor by a
mau who had brought in an obituary
notice for publication. "Well," replied
the editor, "one is a-notice of copartner?
ship and tho other is a notice of dissolu?
tion."
