The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
contain an appeal, of whioh the follow?
ing is a synopsis:
"Women of the United States, the
hour for political action has como. For
the first time in the history of the coun?
try, woman is recognized in the plat?
form of a large and dominant party.
Philadelphia has spoken, and woman is
no longer ignored. This is the thin
edge of the entering wedge whioh shall
break woman's slavery into pieces, and
make ns at last a nation in whioh the
caste of sex shall fall with the caste of
color, and humanity alone shall be the
oriterion of hnman rights.
"The women of the country have long
looked to the Republican party in hope,
and not in vain, for to-day we are
launobed by it into tho political arena,
and it must hereafter fight onr battles.
This great party, this progressive party,
having taken tho initiative step, will
never go back on its record. Many of
the Republican leaders and Republican
candidates extend their sympathy, while
the other party gives no promise, either
in its platform or letters of its nominees.
"Ho moo Oreeley has for yoe rs been
oar most bitter opponent. Both by
tongae and pen he has heaped abuso,
ridicule and misrepresentation upon our
leading women, while the whole power
of the Tribune has been used to crush
ont our great reform, and he now con?
tinues his hostile coarse. Women speak?
ers are earnestly needed to co-operate,
therefore, with the Republican party."
The appeal is signed on behalf of the
National Women's Snffrage Association
by Susan B. Anthony, President, and
Matilda Joslyn Gage, Chairman of the
Executive Committee.
A correspondent of a Vienna paper re?
cently saw the ex-Prince Imperial of
France at Ohiselhurst, and gives the fol?
lowing description of him: "An over?
grown boy with a pleasant faoe, dreamy
but meaningless eyes, manners not very
graceful, and a smile whioh reminds you
of that oold, freezing smile whioh his
father, the ex-Emperor, would put on
when he wanted to make himself amia?
ble. The Prince's forehead is low, and
shows that his intellectual capacity can?
not be very great. His teachers are
?aid to be very much dissatisfied with the
slow progress he makes in his studies."
The Chinese in this hemisphere show
a remarkable aptitude for adopting the
