Empress Eagenie, as leader of the fa?
shions of France and of the civilized
world, has been severely blamed for in?
troducing extravagance in dress, furni?
ture and equipages, and the heavy ex?
penses necessary to keep up appearances
at court have been assigned as the cause
of the general demoralization of French
society, which ended in the downfall of
the empire. But Eugenie is now in exile
at Ohiselhhrst, England, and her most
preoious jewels and ornaments are ex?
posed for sale at the hands of a London
auctioneer, in order to raise the means to
support herself, her husband and her
young son. Whatever may have been
_the poor exiled woman's faults in the
'past, she - certainly is not to blame for
what is going on in Paris society at the
present time. Eighteen months since,
she was tho "observed of all observer.)''
in the oapital of the world. Notwith?
standing Eugenie's absence, and in spite
of the horrible memories of the siege
and the reign of the Commune, the
modistes of Paris are now sending out
dresses and bonnets muoh more extrava?
gant in fashion, and muoh more expen?
sive in cost, than were ever seen in the
days of the empire. Worth, the famous
man-milliner of Paris, is credited with
this revival, and his gorgeous concep?
tions of female dresses are all the rage in
French society, and form the subjects of
ecstatic newspaper articles.

Alabamian, in Chambers County, three
or four centuries ago, in the early recol?
lection of the editor of the Enquirer.
The mail boy who brought the news Fri?
day afternoons was always tardy until
an opportune hanging brought bim in
time once. Hooper was so tiokled that
he wrote an artiole, hoping that a negro
or mail rider would be hung every Fri?
day. The mail boy thus neatly replied:

papers publish the following effusion of
that quintessence of mokeish humbug,
Aaron Alpeora Bradley. It certainly is
the richest document yet emanating
from the facile pea of the Wahoo:

Bryant street, Savannah, Ga., Tuesday
evening, July IC, at 8 o'clock, to ratify
the nomination of U. S. Graut and
Henry Wilson, and to enroll your names
with colored voters, that we may make a
long pall, a strong pull, and a pull
altogether for the good of your poor
wives and ohildren who are Buffering in
Savannah and County. We wish to form
a Grant dab of 500 men, 500 women,
and 500 boys over ten years of age.
Strike for the same rights nuder the
Constitution, God and your native land.
The Youdou festival which flourishes
in New Orleans and vicinity, though dia?
bolical, is interesting, and brings strong?
ly to mind the witch scene in Macbeth.
The last one was held near one of the
bayons on the Ponchartrain Railroad, at j
night time. The Yondon orneen made a
short address to the assembly, both black
and white, all paiticipante, and after?
ward a fire was built upon whioh every
one was required to throw a stick of I
wood, making a wish aa they did so.
Then a black snake was cut into three 1
pieces and thrown into a cauldron upon
the fire, and after it, a cat and a black
rooster, whioh were put in alive. Then
all were ordered to undress; certain pow?
ders were thrown into the kettle; at 12
o'clock all bands were ordered into the
lake; and with incantations, singing,
danoicgand a long sermon, the time was
occupied until day-break. The whole
strange ceremony wound up with prayers
and a benediction.
