The first reporter faltered as ho took that
comrade's hand,
And he said: "1 am tired of tramping through

''Tell the printers and reporters, as they meet
and crowd around
To hear thia awful story in that dirty printing
fround,
walked the city bravely, and when tho
day was done
Full many a street had seen my faco beneath
the July Bun.
And midst that hot and tired throng were
some without a caro;
Not BO, your bumble servant; and I'm glad
I'll not be there
When the foreman comes for copy-though
'twas no fault of mino,
Through all this long and heated day I have
not penned a line.
"Tell the chieftain that another'rep'will have
to fill my place,
For I'm the black Bheep of bia flock, and ho'll
never Bee my faco.
My father waa an editor, and even as a child
My heart leaped forth to hear him fell of |
meetings fierce and wild;
And wheo he left bia anoieut home-I did not
mind it then
I let him take whate'er ho could, hut stole hin
fine gold pen;
And with boyish fun I loved to scratch where
the sun-light used to shine,
On a painted door outside tho house, hut I
never wrote a line.
"Tell tho printers not to weep for me, but
keep on sticking type,
When the locals each como in again with items
fresh and ripe;
And look upon them proudly, with calm and
ateadtaBt eye,
For their brother was a local, too, and not
afraid to fly.
And should another seek my placo, I ask them
in my name
To set hie copy neatly, so 'twill not causo him
shame;
And put the old pen in the rack, (my father's
Sen and mine,)
o honor of an editor, my honor, too,
and thine.
"There's another-not a printer, in tho
happy days gone by.
You'd have known him by the worldliness
which sparkled in bia eye;
Too sharp for losing money, to spend it ho
would scorn,
And as for lending it without a pledge, he'd
do it-in a horn.
Tell bim the last night of my stay, (for ere
tho moon be risen,
I will far away from here and safo from any
prison.)
I dreamed I stood by him and saw the yellow
gold dust shine
In a banker's vault in Main otreet-but then,
it was not mine.
"I saw the Greenbacks laid in piles; I hoard,
or Boomed to bear,
This man of moneyod interest, in tones so
shrill and clear,
'Get out from here, you scoundrel; get
through that open door!'
So I quickly left that tempting place for fear
he might do more.
I owe him forty dollars; it is due to-morrow
morning.
Eut he'll never see bia money-I remember
all his scorning.
He must look ont for his money, I'll look out
for mine,
And we'll meet no more in this town; I'm
bound acroaa the Une."
His voico grew faint and ooarser-in fact,
'twas getting weak;
His eyes put on a careless look, he coughod
and ceased to speak;
His comrade bent to listen to the last word
he had said,

AN INTERESTING INCIDENT.-I know of
no better way to illustrate the temper of
the Southerners in tho Presidential con?
test than by the narration of an incident
that occurred at the Carrolitou a few
days ago :
A gronp of delegates from Texas were
discussing the merri ts of Greeley, when a
lean, lank fellow, with hatchet features,
managed to interrupt the conversation
with the remark;
"Greeley is too bitter a pill to foroo
upon the South."
One of the delegates-a hage indivi?
dual, with a sabre slash across his fore?
head-fired ap in an instant.
"I'll bet ten dollars to a corn-cob you '
don't bolting South," be said, turning on
hatohet face.
"That's so," answered he; "I belong
np in Connecticut."
Tho delegate continued: "Now, seel
here, stranger, you can bot your bottom
dollar agin a bad cent that wo don't
think we're swallowin' a pill in Horace
Greeley; and I reckon yon might get
yonr har raised if you said different down
in old Tex."
At this Judge Reagan, Gen, Cabell,
Col. Ben. Donnelly, and several other
stalwart Texan delegates, who stood by
listening, broke out into a hearty laugh,
amid whioh the gentleman with the
hatchet features slunk away.

TBYINQ TO ADVERTISERS.-There has
been a good joke lately in publishing
circles, too good, indeed, not to be told
by the joked-upon publisher himself.
He proposed to awaken public attention
to tho fact that a biography of Mazzini
was to appear, by inserting tbat mime
six days in saccessioa in the advertising
columns of the leading dailies, each day
in larger and larger capitals. The last
day of the week, he proposed to insert
instead a formal advertisement. An en?
terprising hatter ia Cincinnati saw it,
saw farther a good tbiog ia it, aad the
day before tbe aforesaid enterprising
publisher was ready with his "come
outer," solved tbe mystery to the public
with the fellowing "ad:"

The story is almost as good as that of

butter in Brooklyn, who announces with

ther advertising himself on all the fences
by the connndrum, "Who's Turnball?"
It was solved, not to his satisfaction, by
an ingenious second-comer, who made
answer, "A Fraud."

Mrs. Gratz Brown, it is said, is a
haa?some and wincing lady, mother of
seven ohildrea, six of whom are still
living, the oldest not over fourteen years |
of age. Of these children five are girls.
It is related of the Governor that he
married for love, when Mr3. Brown was
a country maiden, aad that he first saw
her swinging oa a gate ia froat of a
country farm-house, as he aad two or
three other members of the Missouri
Legislature were strolling out of towa
after one of its sessions.
