THE RAILROAD HOG.-Mr. George C.
Harding, in the Cincinnati Commercial,
draws the following pen portrait:
"This seat ia taken, sir." All of the
Commercial readers who have traveled
to any considerable extent are familiar
with this formula. It tells the story of
the railroad hog - the small-souled,
mean, selfish brute who pays grudgingly
for one seat, and strains his small wit to
hold two. This particular hog wore a
plug hat, Bhiny shirt, and closely cropped
iron-grey beard. I know bis kind. He
is an eminently respectables beast, who
always pays his debts promptly, takes
an interest in Sunday-schools, adminis?
trates his deceased brother's ohildren
out of their patrimony, is the President
of joint stock companies, and has bio?
graphical eulogies published in the news?
papers when be finally kicks the bucket.
I knew the hog lied when he said "this
seat ?B taken, sir," but I found@mo "that
was not taken, sir," and watched him to
Bee how many times he would reproduce
the falsehood. The coach was rather
full, and, would you believe it, that mi?
serable hog told sixteeu separate aud
distinct lies, in order to gratify his mean
selfishness--enough to have sunk a
healthier soul to perdition. He varied
the formula; ono time it was a wavo of
the hand and a look to the rear of the
car, to indicate that the holder of the
seat had gone for a drink of water, and
would be back soon. Another time, to
the inquiry of a mild-mannered and
timid questioner, ho replied by a stolid
stare, and then, spreading himself a lit?
tle wider, he resumed the perusal of his
newspaper. I was tempted to crawl np
behind him and hiss in his ear, "You're
un awful liar." But I had my revenge.
A big, red-faced 200-pounder, iu a dirty
linen coat, came in at a way station.
He was sweaty to a fearful degree. His
feet smelt like valerianate of ammonia
and rotten fish, and his breath was a
hot, stinking sirocco, based on bad whis?
key and onions. This fiery and fragrant
behemoth preferred to settle himself in
the seat that was taken. "This seat is"
-began the hog. "Well, I guess I'll
take it till the other follow comes," re?
turned the sweet-smelling heavy weight,
and down he plumped, partially crush?
ing the hog in his descent. The latter
frowned and began to bluster, but the
red-faced ruffian soon took that out of
him with a threat to swallow him whole
-to chaw him up and spit him out-to
pitch him out of the window-to go
through him like a dose of Balts-and to
make various other dispositions of him
in case he didn't simmer down. Our
porcine friend simmered, and then the
barbarian grew good-humored. He told
funny aueodotes, and poked the hog in
the ribs. He wanted to know where he
came from and where he was going.
Ho spat quarts of tobacco juice across
him out of the window, spatting his
shirt-front, between his boots, on his
valise, and all around. He offered him
a "chaw" every time be took ont bis
plug of navy. The hog perspired freely,
and shivered with disgust. Finally he
crawled out and stood up for forty miles,
until another seat was vacated.
Long Branch is not the coolest spot on i
earth, if a correspondent of the Home i
Journal is to bo bolieved. He says: "A '
hotter, more barren, wilderueat-looking I
place than the beach, Ocean Hoad, and i
all the ground a quarter of a mile back I
from' the bluff, is not easily found within
the pale of civilization. ?or do the im?
mense caravansaries, per courtesy called
hotels, and the really beautiful private >
residences, at all relieve the shore from i
its bare, dry and leaf-forsaken appear- I
ance. On the contrary, from morn nntil <
eve-that is, daring the warmest hours t
of the whole day-the empty and dis
oarded-looking piazzas and balconies of
the hotels and villas that stretch on the
beach for miles rather heighten the gene- |
ral dull and pitiable look of the hot and ,
dusty place. But people will come to
'the Branch,' notwithstanding its heat
and dangerous surf, which every year 1
claims its victims. The principal reasons
for tba popularity of Long Branch are
found in the exceedingly fine drives that
abound, and which are very pleasant at
certain hours; in its accessibility to New
York; because of the very pleasant way
of reaching it, and on account of the low
rates of travel-there and back for less
than two dollars."
MR. GREELEY'S PAMII/T.-In view of
future possibilities, not only are the
character and the personal attributes of
the Presidential candidates reouiviug the
attention of a more or less interested
public, but the immediate family of Mr.
Greeley' at least has been, even by his
opponent.?, very pleasantly described.
His wif? is an invalid, so that, if he ever
occupies the White Houce, its cares and
duties will fall upon his only daughter,
Miss Ida, who is a.*'young lady of about
eighteen, of medium height, handsome,
with the soft dark eye, shapely features,
and fine complexion of b?r father. A
mass of dark brown hair is done up in
becoming folds about her head. Her
manners ure affable- and cordial, her
conversation ready and sprightly, and
her domestio accomplishments aro tho?
rough. She may bo epi grammatical ly
described as tho philosopher refined out
of his irregularities and ' eccentricities,
sad feminized." This item is given to
satisfy the onriosity of our lady readers.
The Apaches who made a treaty with
" Gen. Freedmen's Bureau Howard about
a month ?go have left their reservation
and aro now on the war path. The
Indians are not to blame for not trusting
Howard, since there are very few white
people who are willing to do it.
Among onr national post offices are
the following: Ti Ti Toto, Wby Not,
Pipe Stem, Stony Man, Sal Soda, Shick
shiny, Snowshoes, Overalls, Lookout,
Last Ghanoe, Backbone, Marrow Bones,
Sorrel Horse, Tally HQ and Tired Creek.
A Florida jailor, who allowed several
of his prisoners to escape, was himself
sentenced to thirty days imprisonment
ia his own jail.
ANOTHER POISON SCANDAL-TUE AC?
TOR MCKEAN BOOHANAN SAID TO HATE
BEEN MURDERED.-Tho Jackson (Michi?
gan, Citizen gives an account of certain
suspicious circumstances attending the
death of MoKoan Bnohanun. It ap?
pears that at the time of his death Mr.
Buchanan was employing as his business
agent a man named Kendall, who was
recently in Jackson. The Citizen gives
an account of an interview with this
man, and re-produces his story of the
death of Mr. Buchanan. The person
whose name is linked with Mr. Kendall's
story, in the most unenviable connec?
tion, is Miss Gabriello McKean, who,
baviug removed soma time since from
Toledo, lived in Jackson with an uncle,
J. Babbitt Brown, where sbo remained
during one summer, and afterward
accepted an engagement with Mr. Bucha?
nan.
Mr. Kondall bays tbat a short time he
fore the death of the latter, he (Kendul!)
gavo him $10,000 in Government bonds;
that he died very suddenly, and upon his
death it was found that these bonds had
mysteriously disappeared-with the ex
cepiion of $500-ieaviug no trace be
hind. Miss McKean is described as a
very avaricious and ambitious person,
and it is reported of her that she had
said that no man's life should stand be?
tween her and her advancement ic
wealth and positiou. In addition to the
strango disappearance of Mr. Bucha?
nan's money, there were other suspicious
circumstances connected with tho a Hair.
These have been worked up by his
iriends, and the result has been, it is
said, the establishment of a firm belief
that Mr. Buobanan was poisoned, and
by Miss McKean. Mr. Kendall says that
Buchanan's daughter bas caused ber
father's remains to be tuken up for the
purpose of subjecting them to a chemical
analysis, to find ont whether tho suspi?
cions are well founded.
COTTON PICKING BY MACHINERY.-The
Journal of Commerce says: "A cotton
gathering machine was exhibited lately
in the Cotton Exchange. It is in the
form of a doublo car, open in tho mid?
dle, and supported by a large wheel on
each side. It is drawn by two mules
who walk between the row of plants. As
it moves forward, the plants between the
mules pass into the open space between
the cars, and are caught by a series of
metalio fingers whioh allow the stalk and
leaves to pass, hut catch tho boll, break
it from tbe stalk, carry it to tho interior
of the oar and drop it on an endless
oloth running on guide rollers. The
sloth is moved by belts connecting the
wheels with the guide rollers, aud feeds
the bolls into sacks suspended at the rear
at the machine. The inventor claims
that it will do tbe work of fifty-two
men."
A little negro boy, about eight years
of age, was 'kicked in the head by a
mule, on Mr. James Tatum's place, in
this County, last week. The boy re?
covered in half an hour snffioiently to be
ible to ride to mill, but the mule has
been dead lame ever since.
