A POLYGLOT BUSINESS.-The wide
spread influence of American skill and
enterprise has outstripped the compr??
hensions of the Amoricans themselves.
The fabrics of our mills clothe the sa?
vages of both continents. They wrap
the Hons of Africa, and the tawny ski us
of Soalh American pampas. But wider
still are spread the products of our skill
in medioirjes. A late visit to Dr. J. G.
Ayers & Go.'s labratory and o nico in
Lowell, showed UH that the whole sur?
face of the habitable globe pays its tri?
bute there; there they oater to and serve
the requirements of ulmost all nations.
Their publications are in the many
tongues that widely-severed peoples ase.
Their lettera must be read from and
written in many tongues, for which
there sit a long range of correspondents
with the indispensable accomplishments
for their duties. Their daily mail of half
a bushel of letters brings them advices,
orders and remittances from the oircle
of the world. We were overwhelmed
with amazement, and our readers would
be by an inspection of this wonderfully
extensive, health dealing enterprise.

Aiiii.-Libbie Garrabrant, the Paterson,
N. J., murderess, has at last been in?
formed that the Court of Pardons did
not commute her sentenoe to imprison?
ment for life, which the ill-judged dis?
pute of a clerk in the office of the Secre?
tary of State had informed her had been
the case. She learned the truth by ac?
cident, the jail warden, Mr. Goodridge,
having hesitated to tell her till the court
should finally adjourn, fearing tho ef?
fect upon her. Bot when she had
learned that she had still tho prospects
of death before her, she betrayed no
emotion. Meeting Mr. Goodridge, she
ea id: "So my sentenoe wasn't commuted
after all, eh?" Mr. Goodridge informed
her that no official notice had yet been
received, and the girl conversed about
the matter with mnoh unconcern and
carelessness of manner. Her sentenoe is
to be carried into effect on the 19th inst.,
unless the Oourt of Pardons interferes or
a respite is granted by the Governor.
