THE DAILY ''Let our tatt Censures Attend the Trae Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 23, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 82. There was a desperate attempt at mur? der in New Orleans, a few days ago. A. M. Holbrook, Esq., formerly editor of the Picayune, married a woman, in New York, named Jennie Bronson, from whom he. was afterwards divorced. About a month ago, he married Miss Eliza J. Poitevent, a well-known poetess of Mobile, Ala., whose noni-de plume ia Pearl Eivers. The divorced woman be? came enraged, and availing herself of a favorable opportnnity, rushed into Mrs. Holbrook's bed-room, with a loaded pis? tol, and shot several balls into her body. The wounded lady closed in with the would-be murderess, and succeeded in wresting the weapon from her, where? upon the tigress seized a bottle contain? ing bay rum and also a heavy vase and smashed them over the head of her vic? tim. Tho noise attracted ? the attention of an Irish servant, who went to the as? sistance of Mrs. H. The severely wounded woman then succeeded in get? ting to the house of a neighbor, where her wounds were dressed. The fiend then demolished looking-glasses, pic? tures, furniture, etc She was arrested and looked in a cell. Charges of at? tempted murder and injury to property have been preferred by Mr. Holbrook. A VINDICATION OF SPANISH HONOK AND DIGNITY;.-El Cronista, a Spanish organ published in New York, says that if | Gen. Sickles has presumed to be arro? gant with the new Government at Ma? drid, ia regard to the .demands for Dr. Houard, the Cuban prisoner, it advises that tho "oase be at once disposed of in a manner worthy of our honor and the high spirit of our national character let us send the Doctor's head to Mr. Grant through his personal friend, Gen. Sioklee, that they may learn to treat | Spain with the decorum that she is en? titled to." WHAT NATIONAL GOLD BANKS ABB IN OPERATION.-Only three national gold banka are at present in operation under the law oreating that doss of financial institutions, two of which aro of Califor? nia, with a capital of $1,000,000 each, and the third in Boston, with a capital of $300,000. Applications are on file in the office of the Comptroller of the Gur renoy for the establishment of other gold banks at Sacramento, Stockton and Oakland, Gal.
