The French Atlantio cable, within the
last two weeks, parted for the third time !
since it was laid. The separation in all
the instances took place on the Grand
Banks of Newfoundland, abont 275 miles
from land, - and within ten miles of each
other. The breaks are attributed to the
dragging of the oable by the vessels
which are in the habit of anoboring io
the vicinity.. It is therefore proposed to
lay a new section of oable in deeper
water. The connection by tho now
ronte, it is statod, will be made in a
short timo.
The editor of the Puebla diieflain,
knows a man who has discovered a
mountain of bard soap near that place,
.nd, what is still queerer, this abnormal
mineral production is soented. The
editor has washed himself with the
article in question, and is astonished at
tho result, pronouncing it to be of a very
superior quality. At the base of this
saponeoeous mountain is a river, afford
ing an exoellent site for a great interna?
tional laundry.
The States paying the highest amount
of taxes annually, are New York, $18,
550,000; Massachusetts, $24,922,000;
Pennsylvania, $24,531,000; Ohio, B23,
526,000; Illinois, $21,821,000. These
are all which pay over $20,000,000 tax
a year. The oities of the State of New
York pay over $24,000,000 taxation;
those of Massachusetts, $12,000,000; of
Pennsylvania, $14,000,000; of Ohio,
$12,000,000, and of Illinois, $13,000,000.
There is much joy in Texas over the
fact that at length the United States
troops have commenced a systematic
warfare against the Mexican thieves,
who for the last year or so have devoted |
muoh of their valuable time to the whole- j
sale stealing of cattle in the State in
question.
Some men who were blasting rocks in
Bowling Oreen, Ky., turned 1,700rattle?
snakes ont of their beds. They had
gathered together for a jubilee rehear?
sal, but, from circumstances over which
they bad no control, will not be present
at the monster undertaking.
An English oraoksman lately robbed a
French bank of $5,000, and while the
detectives had him in custody, examin
. ing his baggage, he managed to Blip out,
look the door on his guard and make bis
escape.
John Robertson, a Morrisania, N. J.,
constable, has been fouud guilty of mur?
der in the fourth degree, for killing a
prisoner who was trying to escape, and
sentenoed to prison for two months and
a fine of $150.
The water famine in Key West is said
to be so serious that the commandant of
. Fort Taylor has placed the immense cis?
terns of that institution at the disposal
of the thirsty people.
The Russian Embassy at Teheran has
informed the Government of St. Peters?
burg that fever and cholera have entire?
ly disappeared from Persia. The har?
vest prospects are good.
The annual income of tho lady who
presides over the Bepablio of Bonnets in
Paris is $400,000.
The City of Washington has been put
