THE HAILI 'Let our just Censures PHENIX. Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 1G, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 76. THB AGE OF Pnoaiussa-A correspond? ent writes of tho late editor of New York Herald: "To the few acquaintances bo had, Bennett occasionally conversed in a very striking way. He was not only thoroughly posted concerning all public questions, bat he kept himself thorough? ly informed about the literature of the day, and new ideas of every kind, scien? tific and philosophical. Not long ago, he delivered to one of his visitors a monologue) about things generally, which, with his intensity and in bis Hoot tish accent, was quite impressive. It was all about this extraordinary oge of oars, this nineteenth century, with ita revolutionary ideas, religions, political and social, its million inventions,, its Steam engines and mechanical foroes, it? seientifio discoveries in all fields and all directions; its immense literary fertility, which pnts books in every man's boase; its world-competing newspapers, willi their enterprise, advertisements andre venues; its moral earthquakes, intellect? ual volcanoes, and spiritual fires; its enormons aotivity, ceaseless rnnning to and fro, and fierce struggles-the rum? bling in its bowels, which portends some? thing or other; the oraze in its head, the glare in its eye, which have a meaning in them. It's all coming to something, Bnid he, energetically. I'd like to live 100 years, to see what it's all coning to. It must bring forth something or other; destroy this old world or make a new one, yon may be sure of it. Tbis pretty sketch of a long, energetic and startling monologne can give no idea of the way in which the enigmatical man, of whom few people know anything, occasionally delivered himself to a visitor." Bismarck's ill health imperatively de? manding immediate relief, and the pro? bability of his receiving a lengthy fur? lough, it ia intimated that he will make I a tour of tho United States-snob having 1 been his desire for years.
