A COLONEL IN PETTICOATS.-To satisfy
that inordinate and unhealthy thirst for
notoriety at any price, which seems to
have beoome a characteristic of the
"woman's rights" exponents and free
lovers generally, Tennie G. Olaflin, one
of the firm of Woodhall Sc Olaflin, re?
cently ordered, we see by the Sun, a
colonel's uniform, to appear at the Grand
Opera House, New York, on horseback,
to advocate publicly her qualifications to
fill the place at the head of the Ninth
Regiment, left vacant by the death of
Fisk, and to enlarge upon the general
capabilities of woman for oooopying any
position whatsoever that they may
ohoose to tarn their hands to. Owing,
however, to the refusal of Mrs. Fink to
allow the use of the Opera House for any
saoh purpose, the thing was defeated.
The "code" is not what it used to bo.
After Mr. J. P. Domeneck, of the New
Orleans L'Avenir, had intimated for 346
times that Mr. J. Noblom, of the Dee,
was a sooundrel, Mr. J*. Noblom chal?
lenged him to a dael, and the duel came
off on Wednesday.' The first fire didn't
do any barm, bat at the second Mr.
Noblom threw up his arms and fell.
They thought he was killed, but he
wasn't. Before going upon the gory
field ho bad taken the precaution to stan
foar pounds of cotton batting beneath
his vest-for his stomach's sake-and the
ball lodged in this. There was great in?
dignation at his unohivalrous conduot
for a time, but when the seconds dis?
covered that the other man had the same
forethought, they retired in disgust.
A wealthy banker in one of the West
side avenues has gone to some expense
in having a ooat-of-arms invented and
emblazoned for him. He has adopted a j
loaf for his crest, which some of . his
neighbors are wicked enough to call his
ernst. This is probably to show that he
has rison and is well bred.
