How AMERICANS TRAVEL.-The follow?
ing ia taken from the private letter of a
Oinoinnatian abroad: We left Monday
morning by the Mt. Oonis Tunnel, with
watches all in hand. There was a dis?
pute whether it took twenty-seven or
twenty-eight minutes. It was Ighted
every mile; but juBt as we entered we
had begun conversation with a party
from B. They amused me so niuo h that
I forgot to think how long the tunnel
waa going to be. This party sailed in a
chip by way of Fayal to Lisbon, but did
not go ashore. Some one said there waa
nothing to see. Stopped at Gibraltar,
bot did not land there, for an English?
man who had spent three months there
told them it was a dull plaae. Came to
Leghorn. Did not go to Borne for fear
of a fever. The pioture galleries in Flo?
rence were in such a muddle that they
oonld not tell one pioture from another.
Indeed, traveling was a bore. There
was no country like America, and the
lady had but one pleasant idea connect?
ed with Europe, and that was shopping.
She was going to.buy "lots of things" in
Paris, and her mind was taken np with
the size of the trunks required for the
purchases.
The topography of Vesuvius is report?
ed to be completely ohanged since the
eruption. A correspondent, writing
from Naples, says: "It is as though an
earthquake had altered everything.
Hills have .appeared where, but a few
days ago, stones stood for visitors to rest
npon. Precipices have been formed
which almost prevent further advanoe.
All is altered; the very shape of the
mountain has lost its well-known out?
lines, and the view is appalling."
