tablishment, the manager of which is an
anoient acquaintance. "Now," said he,

in the place across the way." Shortly
afterward I met a local politician. "Ail
the Democrats in my ward," said he, "go

campaign club, nearly all Democrats;
trat they've elected a Republican for
President and a Datohman for Vice-Pre?
sident. It's a big thing, I tell yon."
"Here's to old Horace!" shouted a sten?
tor-voiced black-beard at Crook & Duffs
bar, as he raised bis tumbler half-filled
with whiskey-straight, and the rattling
glasses of the crowd were raised in the
air with eries and plaudits before their
oontonts disappeared down their throats.
In the rotunda of the Astor House a 1
noisy crowd were gathered round Aroby
Bliss, the great original Grant man from
Brooklyn. "This orowd all go for old
Ohappaqaa," cried one of them, as he
eyed me, "and it's a orowd of original
Grant men, who believed him to be the
only real genuine Jaoob till they found
ont he was a Peter Funk."

A DESPERATE AFFRAY.-A desperate
shooting affray took place in New York,
on Saturday night. William Gould, un
ex-poliooman, William Anderson and
William Devere, bar-tenders, and a per?
son called Gap, were passing through
Mercer street, when one was attacked by
another party, including one Theodore
Gardner, a broker, residing at Inwood,
on the Hudson; blows were struck and
pistol shots fired. Anderson and Devere j
were both shot in the thigh, and Gard?
ner was hit in the temple, side and hand.
The latter's inj urica are said to be mor?
tal. Anderson may also die, bnt De?
voro'? injuries are not serions. Gard?
ner's companion, who is said to have
fired the shots, escaped. Pani Lowe,
son of ex-Governor Dowe, of Maryland,
has been arrested, charged with firing
the shota. It is stated that he admits
having used a revolver to defend his
friend.

in Columbia, on Tuesday, the 11th June next.
