BEING ELECTED.-It costs something to
be elected to the British House of Gom?
mons. In a recent contest in yorkshire,
the legitimate expenses of the Buooessful
candidate were officially reported at
$53,615, ?bile the unsuccessful antago?
nist had to pay $12,169. A member of
Parliament receives no salary or pecu?
niary allowance of any sort; and in case
of a contested election the sitting mem?
ber defends his right at his own expense,
eave in some exceptional oases, when the
contestant has to pay the costs of both
parties. Though the earns paid by the j
Yorkshire aspirants for legislative honors
wore rather extravagant, there are Sena?
tors and Governors in this republic
who have spent much larger sams in
their eleotion ; bat we doabt that their

head of legitimate.
