York correspondent'of the Boston Jour?

nave a hard time of it in resisting calle,
which pour in from every quarter.
Popular men--as they are called-ore
not numerous, and the demand very
greatly exceeds tho supply. Onr versa?
tile, witty and popular Irishman, Henry
M. Gallaher, has had a regular siego.
The thriving town ot Elizabeth hat com?
pleted a very churchly Baptist edifice,
and the society wanted a minister to fit
the church. Mr. Gallaher waa selected,
and a call regularly made oat. A wealthy
Boan 4a the pariah, who has any quantity
of land to sell, contributed toward the
salary $5,000 a year, while the oh arch
was to raise- $2,000. His present churoh,
not to be outdone, raised his salary to
the same plane. Then the spirit of
rivalry commenced between the two, the
pastor being nearly torn to pieoesand
distracted. Last 'week, he called bis
official men together, and announced
that he should stay with his present
charge. The decision was telegraphed
to tho wealthy gentleman of Elizabeth,
and he took the first train for New York.
On reaching the parsonage, they found
the minister nedor the charge of a doc?
tor. The door bell was unhung, and
admission positively denied to every
one. But sor van ta aro human, and
money laughs at locksmiths. Admission
was obtained through the basement,
and the persistent committee man seated
himself in the chamber of the patient
The interview lasted from a o'dook until
2 in the morning. $10,600 salary was
offered, and a house and lot, valued at
815,000, would bo given in fee to the
minister. This seemed to upset things.
Last Wednesday, Mr. Gallaher quietly
packed his trunk, stepped on board of a
Ganarder, nod has gone abroad, leaving
both churoh es in a stew. The matter has
got into Wall attest, and the betting is
sixty to forty that Elizabeth wins.

ture," said the obild. So the gentleman
sat very still, and she worked away
earnestly for awhile. Then she stopped
and compared her work with tho origi?
nal, and shook her little head. "I don't
like it much," she said. " 'Taint a great
deal like you. I guess I'll put a tail to
it and call it a dog!"
