THK INDTAIT THBBTTOBT MASSACRE - In the mystery which baa enveloped the Tahlequah slaughter,, ia the Indian Ter? ritory, we fear thar?, are glimpses of criminality in a very different quarter from where the first reporto placed it. Friend Hoag, of the Society of Quaker*, telegraphs Gen. Walker that "the diffi? culty originated in the imprudent inter? ference by Federal authority with Chero? kee laws while being duly exea ut ed under treaty rights." Let ns examine the his? tory and apparent rationale of this inter? ference. One Frootor, in attempting to kill a citizen of the United States named Kia terson, shot and killed Eisterson's wife,, a Oherokeo. This is the history of the affair, as told by United States offioiala. The murdered woman being a Cherokee, the murderer was arrested and arraigned before a Cherokee court, in aooordanoe with treaty stipulations. Bat Frootor I had. committed another crime of lesa magnitude, in attempting to kill an American citizen; and tho nationality of the latter gave jurisdiction, aa to thia part of the offence, to the Federal courts. While the trial was proceeding lawfully and, peacefully before the proper tribu? nal, certain deputy marshals, with a poste, made' an armed demonstration against the Cherokee oourt; they were resisted, and suffered considerable loss; and in the melee a number were shot, including the presiding judge, and the prisoner escaped. Now, it will be noted that Frootor waa on trial for murder ac tuaily committed ; that the charge against him tn the. Federal courts was merely an unsuccessful attempt to kill, being a comparatively trivial crime; that there waa ne effort to arrest him by the Fede? ral authorities nntil it > became evident that he waa about to stand trial for his life before a lawful court; that the Fede? ral authorities did not wait nntil this] court had decided whether the killing of the woman was premeditated or acci? dental. J}Q not these circumstances make room for tho horrible suspicion that this whole exploit was a regularly planned ' rescue?
