VIII-NO 4", THE MEXICAN MUDDLE.-There seems to be no certainty BB to the real position of Mexican affairs. One day wo are in? formed that tho insurrection has been completely crashed, another that it has received new vitality and is making suc? cessful headway against the Jnarist forces. The latest advices from Mata moras are noe very favorable to tho Go? vernment, and the rebels neem to bo in a fair way of capturing the city. The only relief for the distracted oountry ap? ?ears to be an Amerioan protectorate, iven that, however, might prove to be a jumping from tho frying-pan into the fire, unless the O rant faotion should be ousted from the United States Govern? ment. TBB TOMATO AS FOOD.-A ohemiet of some celebrity considers the tomato an id valuable article of diet, and ascribes to it important medioal properties. He re? gards it as peculiarly useful in all thoso affections of the liver and other organs where calomel is considered iudispeusi ble; and believes that a chemical pill can be obtained from it which will alto? gether supercedo tho use of calomel. He soys that it is also almost a Boveroign remedy for dyspepsia and indigestion, and advises the frequent use of it as an article oj diet. The Aiken Daily Journal says the Sentlemen who have, charge of tho Port (oyal Railroad evidently mean business. We learn that wotk along the line is ho? ing pushed most vigorously.
