/noa*} givea the following account of a
natural bridge np in the mountains
which, in some of its proportions, at
least; exceeds in curious interest the
celebrated Virginia geological conforma?
tion of tho same nature:
In Garter County, Kentucky, there ia
a great curiosity called the 4'Natural
Bridge," which well repays a visit to
those attracted by strange and sublime
soenery. It spans a stream called Little
Carry, which falls into Little Bsndy
Kiver. This bridge is 210 feet in the
span, 196 feet high, 12 feet wide and 5
feet thick in tho middle and 80 feet at the
ends, being arched underneath and level
on the top. 1(10 feet below it is a cae
cade with a fall of 75 feet, and two miles
distant there is another cascado with a
fall of 200 feet. From the bottom of the
ravine a spruce pine has grown UJJ to the
height of _ feet above the bridge, mak?
ing its entire height 200 feet. The sides
of the ravine are so ragged that, were it
not for a natural stairway, a person on
the top of the bridge wishing to get un?
der it would have to walk two miles.
It is interesting to compare the dimen?
sions of this bridge with those of the
celebrated Natural Bridge of Virginia,
which is 90 feet in the span, 80 feet wide,
50 feet thiok and 220 feet high. The
bridge is not tbe only natural wonder of
the neighborhood. In its vicinity are
two streams, known ac Big Binkey and
Little Binkey, which emerge from the
ground good-sized streams, and after a
course of about two miles again disap?
pear. There is also an artesian well
which formerly threw up a jet about
four feet high, of the size of a common
barrel; but, having been obstructed by
stones and trunks of trees thrown into it
by persons desirous of finding out its
depth, it now only plays to the height of
a foot above the level of the pool. Some
years ago, in the mohth of August, the
writer encountered an enormous rattle?
snake crossing the road near the bridge.
Its length just reached across tho road,
and in thickness he seemed to measure
in the middle of the body about as much
as an ordinary churn. I tied my horse,
got some good rooks and tried my best
. on him; btrfcaoy Tolley only caused him
to make the^imsds ring with his rattles.
So, not liking' ?the look of his eye, I
mounted' niy norse and made a flank
movement, leaving my hero in posses?
sion of tho field. I told sn old citizen
what I had seen. He said: 4'Signs of
that snake have been found there for
twenty years." I suppose he lived in
one of the large oaves around the bridge.

cide at once whioh business they prefer
to pursue, as no holder of pnblio office is
hereafter to be permitted to engage- in
any outside Boheme of money making.
The enactment of a similar law here,
while it might temporarily inconve?
nience some of our most loyal pnblio
men, would at all events tend to elevate
the estimation in whioh our representa?
tives are held abroad.
An exchange says: 4'Don't borrow a
newspaper; nearly all the prevailing epi?
demics ore spread in this way. If you
don't want the small-pox take your paper
direct from tho publisher."

In Boerne Oounty, Texas, lately, a soit
was brought to recover $500, the pur?
chase money of a jaokass sold by the
plaintiff to tho defendant. The ass was
sold on credit, and the defendant had
failed to come to time. On the cause
being called up, the defendant walked
into the court room leading the jack,
and "made a tender of him in open
court." Everybody was convulsed with
laughter, even the Judge. Tho animal's
head was deoked with a stoye-pipo hat,
a pair of linen pants covered bis fore
legs, a large pair of spectacles crossed
his eyes, and a placard hung on a con-.
spiouoUB part of the animal bearing this
inscription: "8500-cheap for caBh."
A "Digest" was opened before him, and
it so worked upon his feelings that he
gave vent to one nf those moving bursts
of "'eloquence" for which these long
eared animals are so much noted. Dur?
ing all this time it was impossible for
the officers ot tho court to preserve
order or decorum. It is needless to add
that the case was discontinued by the
plaintiff.

A man in Warsaw, Indiana, has a jail
of ' 'sown. He bought it very cheap of
