We can scarcely speak with certainty I

ent; nevertheless, she is great in her old
renown, and there come revelations from
her towering and time-defying mona?
mente, which speak not only of departed
glory, bnt cast some light on a forgotten
civilization and arts which are lost.
It is a popular error to believe that
the orocodile was an object of universal
homage in Egypt; that it was so in some
seotions of that country, and also io
Thebes, we are informed by historians,
who assure ns that the monster was by
them kept sacred, being kept and fed by
them with scrupulous caro. This singu?
lar object of adoration was decked with
b/aoelets of preoious stones cast about ifs
feet, and from its threatening head de?
pended ear-rings of great value. We are
told that "thia formidable denizen of old
Nile grew tame in the hands of its wor?
shippers, and that? after death, it was
embalmed sumptuously."

tensive grottoes, out into the limestone I

On the contrary, Egyptians, of other
localities, detested thia animal, and
oought to destroy it by every means in
their power. It Bee me that in glass
making, the manufacturo of linen, in
dyeing, and in rope making, this ancient |
people were well skilled. Oambyses,
and Ptolemy Latbyms aided largely in
overthrowing this peculiar, and once
grand empire. Mathematical science
dates earliest from Egypt, and the mag?
nificent style ot her monuments still defy
competition. ? The mind which loves to
pierce hoar antiquity, finds in Egyptian
records and intaglios ample study, while
the present aspect of thia land, so full of
historic interest, biblical as well as pro?
fane, affords a wide and exhanstless field
of investigation. The instability of em?
pire, the rise and fall of art and soience,
axe grimly shadowed forth from the gi

egraded oondition of a people who
once taught Ionia the glory of learning,
and whose princes reveled in fabulons |
grandeur. How sternly are we reminded
by its past and present of the mutations

Tna GRAVE OP GENERAL TIIXJHMAN.
The following singular story is vouched
for by any number of citizens in the1
neighborhood of Vicksburg: "In the
blooming, beautiful, balmy May of 1863,
one of those dreadful, battle-stained
years never to be forgotten, Gen. Tilgh
man fell, shot dead, at the battle of
Champion Hill, gallantly struggling in
defence of his cherished principles.
His noble lifo ebbed away on the spot
where ho fell, and the und earth drank
his blood with greedy thirstiness. But
upon that immediato spot grew a peach
tree that had reached maturity, while its 1
roots steeped themselves in the martyr's
blood. Singular to relate, the leaves
and fruit of this tree are a blood-red
color. The tree was transplanted, and
is now in the orchard of Dr. J. L. Heb?
ron, of this County. The propagations
from the tree are of the same peoaliar
color. There is something very peculiar
about this. We have seen the leaves,
and must confess that they do look and
even (to us) smell like blood. Tho fact
can be witnessed by those taking the
trouble."
