and House of Representatives of the State
of South Carolina, now met and sitting in
General Assembly, and by the authority of
the same, That W. H. Jones, H. J. Max?
well, J. A. Bowley, P. R. Rivers, E. P.
Stoney, Jasaes Major, Joseph Quash, M.
J. Hirsch, C. D. Hay ne, John O. Ford,
E. Ferguson, James Johnson, J. B. Bas?
combe J. S. Mobley and E. M. Sumter,
together with such other persons who
are now or may hereaftor bo associated
with them, be, and they are hereby, de
dared a body politic and corporate, (for
the parp?se of making loans of money,
by certificates or otherwise, seoured by
mortgage on real estate and personal
property, of any and all description, or
by conveyance of the same to their mem?
bers and stockholders or other persons,)
by the name and style of the "Mer?
chants' Building, Trust and Loan Asso?
ciation, of Aiken, South Carolina." The
capital stock of said association shall
consist of twenty-five hundred shares, to
be paid by successive monthly instal?
ments of one dollar on each share, so
long as the corporation shall continue;
and the said shares to be held, trans?
ferred, assigned and pledged, and the
holders thereof to be subject to such re?
gulations, for defaults in their payments,
as may be prescribed by the by-laws
created for the government of the cor?
poration.
SEO. 2. That the said corporation shall
have power and authority to make any

ment aa are not repugnant to the Consti?
tution and laws of the land; and shall
have emoh succession and number of
members and officers as shall bo ordained
and chosen, according to the rules and
by-laws made, or to be made, by them;
shall have and keep a common seal, and
alter the same at will; may sae and be
?ned, plead and be impleaded, in any
court of law or equity in this State; and
shall have and enjoy every right, privi?
lege and immunity belonging to corpo?
rate bodies, as guaranteed by the laws of
the land.
SEO. 3. That the said corporation shall
have power to take, purchase, hold and
enjoy real estate, and to sell and transfer
the same, as may be deemed proper, to
its members and others, on such terms
and on BU oh conditions, and subject to
suoh regulations, as may be prescribed
by the rules and by-laws of said corpo?
ration.
SEO. 4. That the funds of said corpo?
ration shall be loaned and advanced to
its members and stockholders or others,
npon the security of real and personal
property, and used in the purchase of
real estate for the benefit of its members
and stockholders, on such terms, and on
such conditions, and subject to such re?
gulations, as may, from time to time,
be prescribed by the rules and by-laws
of said corporation ; and it shall be law?
ful for the said corporation to hold such
land, tenements, hereditaments and per?
sonal property as shall be mortgaged or
conveyed to them in good faith, by way
of security, upon its loans and advances,
and may sell, alien or otherwise dispose
of the same to its members, stockhold?
ers or others, as they, from time to time,
may deem expedient.
SEC. 5. That all the privileges, rights
and immunities conferred upon any and
all ohartered banking corporations in
this State be, and the same are hereby,
oonferred npon the Association hereby
incorporated, and they shaU be, and are
hereby, authorized and empowered to
adopt any and all such charters to facili?
tate them in carrying on the business
contemplated by the Association.
SEC. G. That this Act shall be deemed
a pnblio Aot, and oontinue in force for
the term of fourteen years; and tho same
may be given in evidence without boing

hereby, authorized to cause to be re
opened the old.Gadsden Road, com
menoing at a point near Jones' Crossing
on the McCord's Ferry Road, and ending
at the Gadsden Depot, on the South Ca
rolina Railroad.

SOUTH CAROLINA.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate
and House of Representatives of the Stale
of South Carolina, now met and sitting in
General Assembly, and by the authority of
the same, That the members of the said
society be, and they are hereby, deolared
to be a body oorporate, by the name and
style of the "Damasous Baptist Church,"
and by that name and style shall have
succession of officers and members, and
shall have a oommon seal.
SEO. 2. That the said corporation
abell have power to purchase, receive
and hold any real or personal estate, not
exceeding in value the som ol twenty
thousand dollars, and to sell, convey
and dispose of the same, and, by ita cor
porate name, may sue and be sued, in
any court of this State, and to make such
rules and by-laws, not repugnant to law,
as it may consider necessary and expe?
dient.
SEO. 8. This Act shall be deemed and
taken to be a public Aot, and shall conti?
nue in force for the term of ninety-nine
years.

Ordinances Respecting the Sabbath.
Ohief of Police Jackson requests ns
to say that the following ordinances will
hereafter be strictly enforced, a resolu?
tion to that effect having been adopted
at the last meeting of Council:
AN ORDINANCE TO CLOKE BARBER SIKH'S ON
THE SABBATH DAY.
De it ordained, by the Mayor and Alder?
men of the city of Columbia, in Council
assembled, and by the authority of the same,
That from and after the passage of this
ordinance, it shall not be lawful for any
barber shop, in the city of Columbia, to
be kept open on tho Sabbath day, nor
for any barber to exercise the business
of bis trade on said day; and any person
who shall offend against this ordinance
shall, on conviction thereof before tho
Mayor, or any one of the Aldermen, be
fined not exceeding twenty dollars, ($20,)
at tho discretion of the Mayor or Alder?
men, who shall try the case, whioh said
fine shall be collected in the manner now
provided by law.
AN ORDINANCE FOR THE BETTER OBSERV?
ANCE OF THE SABBATH DAY.
SECTION 1. De it ordained, by the Mayor
and Aldermen of the city of Columbia, in
Council assembled, That from and after
the passage and promulgation of this
ordinance, any merohant, shop-keeper
or vender of wine, spirituous or malt
liquors, in any quantity, either under a
tavern or retail license, who shall keep
his, her or their store, shop, bar-room or
saloon open for tho transaction of busi?
ness on the Sabbath day, shall be sub?
ject to a penalty of not more than forty
five dollars, nor less than twenty dollars,
at the discretion of the City Council of
Columbia, for each and every violation
of this ordinance.
SEC. 2. And be il further ordained,
That any person who shall publioly work
or labor, or employ any othef person to
do HO, on the Sabbath day, (except in
cases of emergency,) shall be subject to
a penalty of ten dollars for each and
every offence.
SEC. 3. De il further ordained, That
this ordinance shall take effect from and
after its ratification, and that all ordi?
nances and parts of ordinances repug?
nant to this ordinance be, and are here?
by, repealed.
