the South. The monstrous exaggera?
tion of taxes and debts in most of the
Southern States is the fruit of white
villainy. The thieves who perpetrated
these robberies are now seeking to escape
the just punishment ot their crimes by
bawling lustily, "Grant," "Grant;"
.Tm for Grant;" "Hurrah for Grant."
The Cincinnati movement is at deadly
fend with these robbers and their evil
deeds. Lat the honest and upright co?
lored men join it, then, and thus rid
themselves of orimes which others only

STEEPLE-CHASING IN ENODAND.-"Ad?
mirers of our national sport of steeple?
chasing," says tho Pall Mail Gazette,
"among whom are to be included, we
suppose, the knots of toughs who
gather round the 'nastiest jumps' in the
undisguised hope of witnessing acci?
dents-most have had a very interesting
day st Liverpool last week. Newspaper
accounts of the race for the grand na?
tional steeple-chase informs us that, 'at
the second fence into the country, Prim?
rose, the ex-favorite, fell in running,
and was jumped upon by Marin and
Philosopher, her back being broken; i
bnt what was more unfortunate, her
owner' and rider, Mr. Brockton, sus?
tained such injuries that he had to be
carried to the nearest farm-house.
Byshworth fell at Beecher's brook, and
two fences after Cinderella BIBO fell. A
little further on Nuage broke his fetlock
joint, while Franc Luron broke down,
and being cannoned against by Aoton,
the pair fell at the Table Jump. Prim?
rose, who had broken her. back, was
afterwards shot.' "
When Cal. Logston went on the scaf?
fold to be hanged at Jamestown, Tenn.,
the other day, for the murder of the
Galloway family, the Rev. Mr. Wright
preaohed a funeral sermon an hour long.
Of course, the religious rite was right,
but we must write that Wright had no
right to keep 2,000 people waiting so
long for the hanging.
A life oonviot in the Indiana State
prison committed suicide in his cell the
other day. He made a slip-noose of his
suspenders, place them around his neck,
sat down and tied his hands across his
kn ses, fastened the suspenders to his
hand with a piece of twine, leaned
back and choked himself to death.
