"Let cur inst Censures ^^^^^^^^^^^^^?^^ Attend the True Event."
BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., TUESDAY MORNING, APRIL 1G, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 23.
THE LIBERAL MOVEMENT IN WASHING?
TON.-For some days past the manipula?
tors of the wires in the liberal Republi?
can- movoment here have been very aa
tive in setting pegs for the Cincinnati
Oonvention, and this afternoon they
held an important conference at the
Capitol. There were present Senator
Schurz, Trumbull, Tipton and Fenton,
besides Col. Grosvenor, ex-Governor J.
M. Ashley and several other gentlemen
of prominence. Reports were present?
ed from nearly all the States, showing
that there would be a muoh larger at?
tendance at Oincinnati than waa at first
supposed. There was little talk about
candidates, although there can be no
doubt there has been an understanding
between them as to the course to be pur?
sued in the matter. The feeling was for
pushing Trumbull for the nomination,
but for abiding in good faith the action
of the Convention, should Judge Davis
or Charles Franois Adams be named.
Sumner and Logan were not present,
but it is well understood that they will
give a hearty support to whatever the
others moy do for the good of the Con?
vention.
A California court has granted a di?
vorce to a husband on the ground that
he waa insane when he married. The
judge has the immediate prospect of un
immense business, and the PuciQc Rail?
way Company is making provisions for
an extraordinary travel Westward dur?
ing the spring.
