MR. GKEELEY AND THE TAIUFF.-Mr.
Horace Greeley explains in the Nu w York

and his protectionist friends will be
satisfied, he says. It is conceded that
naked free trade cannot be made the de?
termining question in the Presidential
election. The World and the Cincinnati
Enquirer acoept the suggested compro?
mise; being in more oonoern about cen?
tralization and the constitution than
about economical truths which will beat
the protectionists out of the field when?
ever they have an undisturbed hoaring.
The Tiohborne claimant, in his publio
appeal for aid, says: "That I am Roger
Charles Doughty Tichborne I suiemnly
declare, and which faot I have already
proved by eighty-six witnesses, and will
prove again by more than 200, if neces?
sary; and that I am not Arthur Orton I
will prove beyond the shadow of a
doubt by witnesses who knew both
Orton and myself. As to the tattoo
marks, at leant twenty-four disinterested
witnesses will prove that I, Roger Tich?
borne, was never tattooed, but that Ar?
thur Orton was, there will be conclusive
evidenoe forthcoming."
A story is told of a youthful member
of the bar at St. Albans, who plunged
into a glowing exordium in presenting
his case, in whioh be deolared that
"when we look back upon the untrodden
paths of the future, we behold the foot?
prints of an Almighty hand."
The carpet-baggers' chorus is thus
identified by an exchange:
