THE DAILY
'Let our fust CeniureB
Attend the True Event."
BY J. A. SELBY.
COLUMBIA, S. C., TUESDAY MORNING-, APRIL 9, 1872.
VOL. VIII-NO. 17.
.. Wendell Phillips has been "inter?
viewed," and expresses his opinion of
Grant very freely. Among other things
he says:
"Eecently, while on a visit to the West,
in the vicinity of Grant's former home,
I asked a friend of mino, at whoso honse
I was stopping, what the people there
thought, of tho President, and he replied
that they had avery poor opinion of him;
they did not think he was an honest
man. Hy friend asked me to ride
around within the neighborhood and ho
would show me at least five grog shops
where the now President of the United
States has yet whiskey bills standing
against bim, the score not having been
wiped out!"
A man's own neighbors are always the
best judges of his character. And when
a man's own neighbors put an estimate
on him, it doesn't behoove outsiders to
disputo their judgment. Grant, how?
ever, owes it to the party of great moral
ideas to pay those whiskey bills.
A Yankee who thinks that ceremoni?
ous funerals are a waste of time, has in?
vented a now kind of coffin which will,
he thinks, bo useful. It is like tho ordi?
nary oasket, but rnns upon casters placed
on ono end of it. Ho proposes that,
while the clergyman is reading tho ser?
vice, the coffin shall be wheeled about
the room, stopping before each mourner,
and thus avoiding the long procession
of friends and acquaintances desirous of
seeing the features of the dead which
{oosGB a fanora! now. He estimates that
>y tho use of this "Fugacious. Casket,"
as he has christened it, a clever under?
taker may attend fifty per cent, moro
funerals than under the present system.
The railroad ticket agent in* West
Philadelphia who pretended to have
been knooked down and robbed of
$1,700 attempted suicido on being sus?
pected, but failed, confessod to have
stolen the money himself, and gave it
