BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., WEDNESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 1 1871. VOL. VII-NO. 102,
THB F?KMRR^?. BaA.TTrTTTjri PIOTTBE,
The mop who utanda ripon his owa soil,
who feels thai hythe laws of the land
he is tho rightful oxolusivo owner Of the
land which he tills, is by the constitution
of nature, nnder a wholesome influence,
not easily imbibed from any other
sonree. Ho feels, other things being
equal,1 more strongly than another, tho
character of a man, as the lord'of the
animate world. Of this great and pow?
erful sphere, whiob, fashioned by the
hand of God and upheld by his power,
is rolling through tho heavens, a portion
is his; his from centre to tho sky. It is
the space on which the generation before
him moved in its round of duties; and
he feels himself connected, by a visible
link, with those who preceded him, as
he is also to those who follow him and to
whom he is to transmit a home. Per?
haps his farm has come down to him
from his fathers. They have gono to
their laat home; but ho oan traoo their
footsteps over tho scenes of his daily
labor. The roof that shelters him was
reared by those to whom he owes his be?
ing. Some interesting domestic tradi?
tion ia oonneoted with every enclosure.
The favorite fruit tree was planted by
his father's hands. He sported in his
boyhood beside the. , brook, which still
winds through tho meadow. Through
the field lies the path to the village
school of earlier days. Ho still hoars
from his window the voice of the Sab?
bath bell which called his fathers and
forefathers to the house of God, and
near at hand is tho spot where his pa?
rents laid down to rest, and where, when
his time has come, he shall be laid by
his ohildren. These are the feelings of
the owners of the soil. Words cannot
paint them, gold cannot buy them; they
flow out of the deepest fountain of tho
hoart; they are tho life-spring of a fresh,
healthy and generous national character.

A MELANCHOLY BREAK-DOWN.-Then- aro
lively break-downs that make an audience I
laugh, and there are sad and sorrowful
break-downs that mako tho kind-hearted

enervation of body and mind, which is usually
called "general debility," or "nervous weak?

terminates in atrophy and death. A whole?
some medicated stimulant is the ono thing
needed in caBos of HUH description, and

fact that it combines the properties of an in

secrctivo organs, is on unanswerable argu?
ment in its favor as a general restorative.
